I had even tried gasoline once before, but nothing cleaned the varnish/discoloration off my dipsticks like steel wool...scrubbing with dish detergent/water.
The metal is actually bright now. Makes checking oil levels in less than ideal lighting soooo much easier to see. Before I had to hold at different angles and in varying light to get a good read, especially if the oil was still fairly clean looking.
