Stay Classy Mom, Nice Example For Your Kids

I love the people who race up to the sign and slam on their brakes to dog you. Or they just roll on through........ I just tell myself they will get ticket at some point to make myself feel better.

Stop signs are such an environmental waste. Imagine how much less fuel and brakes we would use ........

Good point.

Why does everyone just assume that it is not just a normal (but rude) family?

I don't want to say pot meet kettle here, but come on guys...open minds are good things...

In every city I've ever lived in, the person with the biggest car/truck has the right away or at least that seems to be the unwritten rule.

People like that have always been around, and always will be around.

When you're in a densely populated area you are bound to see more. When you're in a lightly populated area, you'll see fewer of them.

I've seem the same thing with men, women, and all different races and creeds.

I don't really see how you got that from the post...lots of assumptions there.

The cross traffic was about half way across the intersection when I start. As soon as the traffic clears enough, a woman in a new Suburban with 3 kids in car seats decides she HAS to turn left in front of me.
At this point I'm far enough across the intersection that she has to alter her course to ensure she cuts in front. I stop to avoid hitting her. She proceeds to wave the "you're #1" sign with her middle finger and yell something at me, I'm sure it wasn't an apology.

I'm convinced that stop lights have made people forget the decision making process of stop signs at intersections. This woman obviously forgot that the cars going straight are given the right-of-way, cars turning left turn after the cars going straight have proceeded through the intersection.

What kind of example is this woman setting for the kids in the car? Yelling and profane hand gestures? Stay classy mom...

not to justify the woman's reaction, but I'm sure from her point of view, she was in the right. 4 way stops are very confusing; not everyone is going to agree who got there 1st, whose turn is it, etc.
I really hate it when someone HAS the right of way, but they wave me to go 1st. this scenario was actually in a defensive driving class I had to go to once. could be just as dangerous as someone who goes out of turn.

What I see a lot of, is 4-way stop signs where the cross street has little traffic. The cars on the busier street have a tendency to make "rolling stops"; IE, they stop when they guy ahead stops, then they go when the guy ahead goes. The danger arises when someone going in the opposite direction wants to make a left turn, only to find a second car coming right at them. Happens all the time at one intersection near me.

4-way stops are not treated like a regular intersection with a light, where vehicles going straight have the right of way versus those turning left. Whether you're going straight or left, doesn't make a ****'s worth of difference at a 4-way stop.

From Wikipedia:

"After a full-stop has been made, vehicles usually have the right-of-way to proceed through the intersection in the order that they arrived at the intersection."

Even if there's a long line, one can usually tell when it is their turn based on which vehicles were already waiting when you pulled up to the stop.

Again, from Wikipedia:

"In the USA, if vehicles arrive at approximately the same time, each driver must yield to the drivers on their right."

I've never really practiced this, rather I give a hand gesture or go if I've received one-- Let common sense prevail.

I don't know how wikipedia holds up in court.

The law here is vague and does not have specific instructions for four-way stops:

Quote:
7. Stop signs. Unless directed to proceed by a law enforcement officer or traffic control device, an operator of a vehicle approaching a stop sign shall stop and:
A. Yield the right-of-way to a vehicle that has entered the intersection or that is approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard; and [1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]
B. Having yielded, an operator may proceed. All other operators approaching the intersection shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle so proceeding. [1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]

It appears two parallel straights are legal if both stop at some point and start at the same time (after cross traffic clears.) So long as they aren't infringing on each other's right of way.
Quote:
An operator intending to turn to the left must yield the right-of-way to a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.
[ 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF) .]

I'm going to pin it on the turning SUV driver for not using her turn signal. This makes all the difference at a four-way operating under local custom here. If she HAD used the blinker, the oncoming car should observe the "first come" rule. (tradition?) Other drivers are lulled into a complacency where they assume everyone else uses blinkers. In a more crazy situation they'd drive more defensively, go through 4 ways one at a time, and everything would move more slowly due to the aggressiveness/ poor driving.

My town has been replacing 4 way stop signs with roundabouts. Makes the traffic flow much smoother and safer.

Same with my town... except it seems every time I drive through the roundabout it has tire tracks over the center of it.

That "symbol of yesteryears" is still selling like hot cakes. We are still running max overtime to keep up with demand....

But seeing how brave she would be in a mini was funny!

Only to those that take it that way. I swear, some people think the sun is racist.

Calling someone or something racist is the biggest cop out you can do.

If someone illegally cuts in front of me and gives me the figure, that gives me the right to make any assumption I want about that person.

ie, there's no excuse for behaving like that, especially if the woman had kids in the car.

I agree with you Drew99GT. People are so quick to call racism.
