Hey guys I've been running Havoline 20w50 in my 69 Firebird with a .040 Pontiac 400. I just put some Royal Purple 20w50 and now it smokes on start up after it has sat over night. I noticed this also when I ran RP15w40. It does not smoke with the Havoline or other conventional oils I have tried. What gives.

Start up smoke usually indicates leakage past the valve seals during shut-down. I don't have any idea why RP would do this any worse than other oil. Maybe your valve seals/guides are just getting worn.

Havoline it is and you save $5 per qt. You could look and see if the RP UOAs are shearing and getting thinner than dinos you use to use.

I wouldn't worry about it. Heck, I'd actually probably prefer it. This way, you got a good coat of oil over your cylinders as it sits parked. Then whey you crank it, they are still covered until they burn off.

Try some Auto-Rx.
Your valve seals need to be treated or R&R.They are brittle,Auto-Rx will treat them and make them soft so they can seal again. Will also treat all the other seals.
Good Luck...

Thanks guys for your input. My 400 was rebuilt 5 years ago and has less than 5000 miles on it. Now, I do know that my machinest gave an extra .005 clearance on the bores. This car is not driven everyday or weekend either. It is driven once or twice a month if this makes any difference.

I guess what I'm asking is not whether this is typical of Royal Purple but any synthetic. Will synthetic oil be more likely to leak past my seals?

Also, what is Auto-Rx and where can I buy it?

I'd just buy the Havoline 20W-50, it's much cheaper than either Royal Purple or Auto-RX...

I think synthetic may be a bit too much for a "muscle car" engine designed in 1969. Just my $.02...

The Royle Purple ruined your valve seals. I recommend that you thoughly remove the RP and replace it with an oil that has seal condioners like Valvoline Maxlife.

Whoa, hold on there, are you saying Royal Purple ruined his seals?

Are you seriously trying to say that?

Whenever I post without a smiley, that usually means I'm serious yes.

Oil cannot destroy valve seals.

It might clean away sludge plugging up a worn valve seal, but saying that an oil actually damaged the valve seal is unfounded.

BlazerLT,

This has happened many times before by someone switching from DINO to synthetic on this board. RP and Mobil 1 have done this to more than a few BITOG members.

When the balance between Ester and PAO is not just right for a given seal, causing the seal either to expand or shrink, seal failure is prevalent.

Ok, first off, I don't think RP has detroyed my seals because it was only in my car for one day.

As far as the extra clearance, my machinest, who is a friend of mine told me 5 thousands. The extra clearance is recommended for my forged pistons. When a forged piston heats up, it expands.

To play it safe, I believe I'm going to go back to the Havoline 20w50 SL.

Anybody have a paint strainer and need some slightly used Royal Purple. I'll make you a good deal. (ha, ha)

I agree-since it was only 1 day there is no chance that Royal Purple "destroyed" your seals.

How much smoke are we talking about? Is it just a quick puff? Or does it smoke for several minutes after startup?

It smokes several minutes after start up. Too much for my taste. Now when I changed out the Havoline after getting the motor to operating temps, I put the RP in. No smoke problems.
