So, I guess this means that charging $5 for a cup of burnt tasting coffee from someone with an attitude isn't cutting it anymore?

I still enjoy walking into a Starbuck's (usually it is the one at Union Station in St. Louis) and ordering a "medium cup of coffee, black". I swear to God that most of the people who work there can't handle an order like that, without asking at least 3 questions about it.

What's so confusing about an order for "a medium cup of coffee, black"???

Because it makes you look "cheap," since most customers order higher priced items.

It's the same look they give you when you walk into the grocery store and only buy the on-sale items.

The "barristas" (give me a freakin' break!) don't realize that some people do things like that specifically to poke fun at all the pretension involved in their gig.

I've done the same at starbucks when I can't find a Tim Hortons. I don't feel to silly not knowing all their silly terms. Also at Harveys(a burger chain that custom makes each burger to your spec) I'll order a whopper.... Usually they make me spell out what is on a whopper but sometimes they just do it.

Pretty much agree

This wouldn't be funny if it wasn't freaking true

Some of us buy stuff for the perceived image, not for their quality. I'm sure we're all guilty of this at one point or another.

Well, that's mainly one time charge.

But seriously, they have a tough time ahead. The stores are now run by 2/3 of the original staffs and customers are "cheaper" than before, and when they do buy a latte, they buy a smaller version.

I wouldn't be surprised if they never climb back to the good old price of the good old days.

Some of us do buy only on sale items (what's wrong with that?) and actually like latte or mocha, just not the price.

I always wonder where anti-starbucks people get the idea of $5 cup of coffee. the premium mixed drinks, sure, but they DO offer regular coffee, IIRC a med cup was like $1.35.
doesn't matter to me anyway, the local one is on the chopping block. bad location for them; they were right behind a Wawa, which is a convenience store AND has great coffee!

When what I *want* is a medium cup of coffee? That's what I get everywhere else... the donut shop, the gas station, the drive through at Sonic. I'm not just singling out Starbucks.

You've never went into Advance or O'Reilly's, and bought only oil ... when it was on sale?

It's probably the cheapest coffee they have. If you were ordering one of their beverages at the higher prices they serve, that would be something to whine about.

I'm not saying that it's wrong to only purchase a cup of coffee at Starbucks, but instead, the customers and staff at Starbucks tend to be rather judgmental and image-conscious. So when you only buy a low priced item, they tend to give you dirty looks.

On the other hand, I try to be a good customer. I try to buy a mix of on-sale items and regular priced items. For example, I don't go to the local tire shop and only buy the 19.95 oil change and tire rotation special each time I visit. That's just wrong, as there's no way they are breaking even with that price.

America runs on Dunkin... best taste winner for a reason. What the DD corporate needs to do is make sure the franchisees brew it consistently. Not all of them do.

It's fine for some of us provincial dwellers on some pilgrimage to the upper side of life. I'd never routinely visit an Einstein Bagel Factory ..or any other franchise. If we do get coffee at a convenience store (Wawa is excellent as is DD) we don't worry about saving money. It's not our "routine" habit.

The yuppie is dead ..so are the enterprises that catered to the image. The yuppie image was nature's way of saying you made too much money... realized. Less people with too much money to flash? Less profits from them
