Maybe so it won't accidentally roll in a driveway or garage? But if it's dead and can't be moved from the middle of a busy intersection or roadway, how safe is that? I can easily put my 2018 Impala in neutral with the engine off, by holding the push start button for five seconds with foot off the brake pedal. Why reinvent this? Engineering over-sight or lawyers got involved?

Might be a good idea to have a chat with a tow truck driver before you buy a new or late model vehicle.

This is ridiculous . Mercedes has for years had a small secondary battery to enable the electronic shifting if the car is dead. It even tells you when the battery needs replacing. Why wouldn't GM do something like this?

It’s even worse in this case. The battery was cranking the engine just fine (he attempted to start it), before he attempted to put it in neutral and the dopey ‘conditions correct not to shift’ message was displayed.
