I have a Cub Cadet GT2500 and found that a regular car Super Tech ST3980 will screw right on. It is a longer filter so it adds some oil capacity. I have been running these for about a year now and they seem to work great. Anybody know if the Cub filters have a different pressure relief or anything like that. Just curious if anybody has done this before. I use this filter for all my chevy trucks so it makes it very convenient.

Side Note
I read on one of these posts that somebody got some Mobil 1 Extended Performance tested and it looked good after 100 hours. i have been using regular mobil 1 5w30 and maybe 50 hr changes. I guess ill extend them a little bit. Anyone run 15w40 with good luck?

i have a c/c lt 1045 with the kohler courage v-twin engine.i use after market filters as well with no problems.but if i were you,i wouldnt use 5w30,should use 10w30.i only use gc in mine and it works great.

Whats the part number on the Cub filters? Plug it into the cross reference at wixfilters.com it should come up with a match and that will tell you what the stock bypass pressure is, etc. Then you can lookup a PH3980 and see if there are any glaring differences.

not sure on the number of the OEM filter but it is in my manual. ill look it up and cross reference the numbers. Why not the 5w30. i run the tractor in the winter a lot for plowing and just riding my son around. Little bugger loves the tractor rides. i just figured the extra flow in the winter would be a plus.

because your talking about an air cooled engine here.the manual states something about 5w30 being good for lower temps.thats why i use the synthetic, but still change out at factory recommendations.

Looked up the cross reference numbers. Looks like im running the wrong filter. The oem filter has a 10 psi bypass valve in it. the standard st3980 has none at all. to get a similar cheaper filter get the ST3614 or equivalent. it matches up very nicely to the OEM KH-12-050-08

Or ST3600, or MotorCraft FL400S, or Purolator L10241. There are a pile of usable, economical filters out there.

I run that filter on my Kohler as well with Mobil 1 5w30. "winter through fall" Its all a 30wt at operating temp so I dont worry. Its been good for 100h hours so far with no oil burning.

Yes, for people with OPE that has an engine with a spin-on filter, I recommend they get a Purolator, Wix, etc ... cross reference number and begin buying those filters immediately instead of OEM.

Most Kohler, B&S, etc ... OEM filters are made by Champion Labs (I think) so they are a decent unit ... but they aren't worth the OEM price which can be $10 or more for a shot-glass-sized filter.

Right on. I use the ST3600 or equiv on my Cub Cadet 2544. There are even some PH8A's that will fit no problem. Only issue with some P8HAs is the gasket gets close to the edge of the filter mount base. LOTS and LOTS of choices for OPE engine. Almost as many as their are threads on it too

Compare them. The gaskets on some manufacturer's PH8A equivalents are wider than a 3600 gasket.

Look it up. A quick search of wixfilters.com will show the difference in gaset OD, ID and thickness between the wix equiv of a 3600 and a PH8A. The gasket OD on the 8A is 0.100" larger for wix.

If the gasket is wider and the ID is the same, then the OD has to be larger?!?! Again, with respect to the OPs Kohler Command series twin, the raised face on the filter mount is just enough for a FL400's gasket. Some FL1A equivs will ride just to the edge, some will hang over which wouldn't give me a warm'n fuzzy.

On your Kohler command the Wix 51348 napa gold 1348 is the most accesable one and imho the best to use.

In the summer I will be using the Amsoil EaO 57 because the air filter is the pits on the single cylinder Kohler Command Pro 15 hp engine. Amsoil 10w30/SAE 30 formula 4 stroke and their filter should do this engine good.

I agree, i just like the wix 51516 becuase it is a little longer, other than that it is the same as 51348

Here's a tread that was in the oil filter section, about year ago. It has some good information about riding tractor filters.
