Application: 1992 Chevrolet Lumina Euro (3.1L)
Service Mileage: 2,555
Service Time: 8/10/2009 to 3/28/2010
Oil: Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30

I was curious to see how the filter was holding up. I didn't dump the oil, just the filter. Here are the photos.

The cut open can. ::yawn::

The media 180-degrees from the seam. Looks OK!

The media at the seam. A little uneven.

Looking at the media seam from the inside. But what's this???

Another look. Is the center cage broken? Looking at the inside of the cage from the opposite end, the cage was short-shot; a molding defect.

I tried to get a photo looking down the inside from the opposite end, but I couldn't get the focus right.

I'd like to see the media laid out and inspected for holes.

And thanks for sharing these pictures.

Is this BITOG's version of porn? Exposing naked filters. My how we have sunk into the gutter.

Back on topic, the media looks good but it would be interesting to see more.

Has anyone reported these ST filter issues to Walmart or champ labs so they can track down the assembly line(s) where these bad filters are coming from?

To me the molding defect looks like a legit problem.

But...but..but the nylon center cage is stronger than steel ones!

I don't particular trust nylon in hot oil full of chemicals.

OH NO, we can see that missing portion of the cage caused a serious catastrophic failure now cant we!

In all reality the engine never even noticed.

Engines like ingesting decent sized chunks of nylon.

Yeah, he said that. The breaks appear to be at exactly the midpoint between the vertical (long) bars. So that would make sense. The cage is supposed to be stronger than a metal tube, but that would seriously compromise it.

Small-block Chevy V8s had nylon camshaft gears for about a million years and they survived just fine.

And they did not last anywhere near long as steel gears. Most SBC got steel gears. Besides there are different nylons you know. They also used nylon IMG and that was a flop too. I don't want nylon cam gears, gaskets or filter center tubes.
