Pulled this one off my in law's 00 Frontier. The filter was on for 5 months, short trips, mostly summer. Every single pleats were stright, unlike the other Purolator made filter that I have cut open. I picked these up when they were $2.50 As always, every single 7317 I cut open, looked just like this one.

Maybe the Supertechs are "sleeper" filters. Looks REALLY well built! Is there an online filter match application for these?

I've only done two (7317's), but they both looked great. I still prefer the Purolator since the size of the media area is much greater, but I have a few of these and like them as well.

I'm probably going to run the ST 7317 on my vq40de next oci coming up in less than a month. They look like decent filters for the price. In 6 months I drive less than that and it's kinda hard to justify continuing to run pureones (got to change it out every 6 months for warranty).

I'm doing the same thing on my wife's 06 Pathfinder. I have P1 on it right now. There's no point to run a filter for twice as much as the ST when it gets change out every 4K miles.

Better filtration from a widely-available and not-that-expensive filter isn't worth it? Using a PureONE for a 6 month or 4k OCI is hardly a waste. The extra $4 you spent on it was to filter your oil better, not so it would last longer.

PureONEs aren't designed for long OCIs, and Purolator does not market them as such. They are an upgrade to regular filters run under normal OCIs, whatever is considered 'normal' for your vehicle per the maintenance schedule in the manual.

Purolator Classic = normal efficiency, normal capacity = normal OCI
Purolator PureONE = high efficiency, normal capacity = normal OCI
Bosch DistancePlus = high efficiency, high capacity = extended OCI

Those small SuperTechs like the ST7317 use the traditional steel end caps and center tube, and they look rugged. Keep in mind that most bigger SuperTechs are Ecores with the plastic cage and fiber end caps, unless you can find some old stock somewhere.

I will agree to your view "IF" the P1 perfrom twice as well at other $2.50 filter, since it's twice the price. I'm going to say the P1 only filters about 3-4% better at 40 micron (ST 7317 vs P1 14610). P1 14610 goes for about $6 around where I live vs $2.84 fore the ST. There's no question that the P1 perform better but not at twice the price. Our Pathfinder has seen 90K miles of nothing but a Fram clone, I highly doubt spending twice as much for a filter is going to change anything.

Are you really suggesting that you would expect something that costs twice as much to perform twice good? It doesn't work like that as far as filters are concerned. Yes, a basic filter should get all of the big stuff and most of the small stuff, but if you can get even more particles out of the oil and it would only cost you $3 more to do it, why wouldn't you? Especially on something that's new enough to still be under warranty. Besides, you're talking $3 here. Three dollars.

Sorry, I'm not trying to get on your case personally (or sell PureONE filters). I just don't understand some people's thrift somtimes when it comes to this stuff. Engines are expensive but filters are cheap!

The filter doesn't perform twice as good, that's my point, which doesn't justify for being twice as much. Have you ever seen a engine related issue because someone used an average filter vs a P1? when they are changing the oil every 3K-4K. My engine is going to last waaaayyyyyyyyy longer than the rest of the car or, I will trade it in before it has any engine issue because I wil no longer use a P1. My Honda has been out of warrenty over 7 year ago and our Pathfinder has been out of warrety 60K miles ago. You live in VA, I would be more concern about the road salt than a P1 protecting your engine, but that's just me. My old 83 Tercel and 91 Saturn, the engine out lasted the reason of the car, all it saw was a $2 filter or a Fram clone. I see you use a Proline and STP filter, why not step up to a P1 if you think it's much better?

Exactly ... I have no problem spending a couple dollars more for a better oil filter. Heck, I'd pay a couple dollars more just to get metal end caps and metal center core design. With a PureOne (or similar filters), you're getting that plus top tier filtering performance.

How could you tell either way? It would be extremely hard to do so, but this isn't the point I'm trying to make.

They don't use salt here. Heck, we're lucky if they even plow here!

I've got some waiting in the wings for both cars as I burn though a supply of cheap ones I've managed to collect, nothing more. But again, what I'm using really has nothing to do with the point I'm trying to make here...

Looks good, one the smaller non ecore ST's. ST's haven't been $2.50 here except for a brief time on rollback, more like $2.90 everyday.

That's not been my experience. The AAP Total Grip ($1.45) on left has ~5k, Pure One ($3.75 AAP coupon) ~7k/1yr on the right. Honestly though, perfectly 'straight' pleats aren't the sole measure of a quality filter.

I've used the ST7317's on both of my Nissans. Decent filter for the price. Sadly, I can never find them anymore at my Walmart. Plenty of over priced Orange Cans, no ST's. Managed to grab the last 5qt of Platinum the other day. I hope it was just a low stock day, and not a trend.

wavy pleats are a sigh of coolant/moisture intrusion my friend,,Purolators are a high quality filter.

look at how crazy thin that media is on that, you really think that filter has a good filter efficacy rating?

That's funny because before I put this ST on, I pulled a Purolator off. Are you telling me there was a coolant issue when the Purolator was on, and when i put the ST everything is back to normal? Just because YOU don't like it doesn't make it a bad filter. Some people just don't get the point. The truck is used for short trips, and my in law's don't care about using an expensive filter. All they care is to use a filter that will get the job done for a 3K OCI. Why would I spend twice the the money on a P1 or Wix for a truck that gets about 5,000 PER YEAR. Same things goes for my wife, she see only 4,000K miles PER YEAR. We will trade her car in before we even put 20K miles on it since we got. it. I run a P1 on my Civic because I do 6K OCI in about 4 months.

Dman, where did I say Purolator is not a quality filter? and where did I say ST has a good filter efficacy rating? I even admit earlier that it's not as good as a P1. You are putting words into my mouth. What did you expect from a filter that cost $2.50? It's made for something that will get the job done, for an average filter. Answer this question for me.... What will I benefit from using a P1 or Wix in the next 4 years or 16K -20K miles before we trade our Pathfinder in for something else, The way I see it is, I'm wasting money on something that is NEEDED. If my engine will die in that time frame by not using a Purolator, I would be glad to make the switch.

Never said you said a thing, you do what you want man just stating what i know from NUMEROUS filter examinations.

After reading in this thread about how the smaller pureones filter 99.9% at 40 microns, while the larger pureones filter 99.9% at 20 microns, I'm definitely going to skip the PL 14610 for now on.

Have they changed the metal holes that the filtered oil flows through on the ST 7317 recently? They are now indentations with slits cut into the top and bottom of them... Almost looks like it could restrict oil flow.
