Hello and thanks for the replies folks, and yeah I use a older tractor tire so to keep the pieces from flying away. My father likes to let his season for little more than a yr. He has two long stacks also. I definitely love wood heat also as its a great constant heat.
split firewood the real way: BY HAND

I grew up in a big farm house with a wood boiler. We burned roughly 40 face cords of firewood per winter...all thrown in and stacked by my brother and I. Now that I own my own home, I said goodbye to firewood. I live in an older home that also had a wood boiler when we moved in. I replaced it with an EFM stoker boiler and burn anthracite coal from NEPA. No spilling, no stacking, no bugs, no smoke, no creosote or chimney fires, and best of all...no getting up at 3 am to load the stove/boiler.

Let's see, use chainsaw to cut down tree, limb tree, cut into little chuncks to fit stove, pick up wood pieces and put in truck to haul home, unload truck, split wood, pile wood in shed, repile wood on porch near house within easy reach, put wood in stove, remove wood ash. At least with splitting wood, one is getting some work done, vs. going to the gym and running in circles. It's good to have a closer connection to the food, shelter, and clothing thing, I think. But, it does lose some of its romanticism if you have to do it vs. choose to do it.
