What are

A. Spindle Oils?

B. What are the four most common ISO grades of Spindle oil?

C. What basic additives would spindle oil have?

These are mainly found in textile machines and precision tools that operate at high speeds.

Excellent!

And that is key as to why they have to be of such low viscosity.

And to the other possible viscosities and add pack?

Mola, I'll go for #1 and #2:

1) Spindle oil is for spindle, anti-friction and plain bearings. These are mainly found in textile machines and precision tools that operate at high speeds.

2) I know three of the ISO grades; 2,10, and 22

I'm not sure about the other viscosities?,But at high speeds the bearing should be operating in the elastohydrodynamic mode,so I would guess an R&O type additive package with some AW additives in small amounts. they might use ZDDP as their add pack as this should be multifuncional enough to take care of most of it.

Most Spindles require a low viscosity oil due to their small clearances, closely held tolerances, and high speeds.

The usual grades are ISO 2, 10, 15, and 22.

Because of these speeds and closely held tolerances and clearances, the bearings of these spindles require a highly refined paraffinic or synthetic oil with rust inhibited, oxidation-inhibited, and AW oil.

AS usual, follow manufacturers recommendations since there are exceptions, such as the Filmatic spindles which require an ISO 32 R&O oil only.
