I use this toaster twice a week and probably haven't cleaned it in a year. Anyway, I shook the crumbs out of it yesterday and two spiders dropped out. Strange they apparently either had just walked in or were content with the ocassional high temperatures.

Spiders don't eat bread crumbs. Spiders eat other spiders and insects. I would guess that for your spiders, your filthy toaster is a hostel serving a deluxe buffet of mites, beetles, silverfish, all of who feast on those bread crumbs.
