I had a buddy that worked in Vegas a few years ago. He said he used to cash his paycheck at a certain casino as they would give 10 percent extra on your check. He said the place where they cashed your check was way in the back of the casino and after you cashed your check, you had to walk past all the gaming tables, slot machines, etc. What most people would do was gamble the extra 10 percent thinking it was free money. When they lost that, they would gamble part of their pay check away. He said he was tempted several times, but always resisted the temptation and made an extra ten percent on his income every week.

Lived there 1980-84. Nellis AFB. Went there 4 years ago for a Air Force reunion. Vegas was better 30 years ago. Its population has tripled. Traffic was horrible. Lake Mead water levels are way down. Plus they destroyed Fremont street. Lots of good times there back "in the day"!!!

I believe every word. Seems I was born too late. Same with 42nd street in NYC.

I love this place but it does have some down sides. Economy not the best right now is one, and most of the schools here are dreadful.

The strip is OK if you are in your 20's and looking to party like a high roller, but you gotta' pay. Lots of eye candy, too.

I like downtown much better. Cheaper, much more laid back, and free cover bands almost all the time.

I never did like the flashy atmosphere and expense of LV. I went out there last year. 108 degrees the whole time, late July. Dry, but I stayed inside. Even the pool was uncomfortably hot.

Maybe Las Vegas, new Mexico?

When I was there we went to the "old" Las Vegas ... which is actually Vegas. I seemed to like that a bit better than the strip.

My conference went from 7a-6P, so there wasn't much time to explore.

It's a giant tourist trap for sure. But there's some neat stuff to see in the area (relatively speaking).

I'd probably find a cheap hotel to stay in, rent an economy car ( rates didn't seem that bad) and travel the 4 hour trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.

Personally, I wouldn't want to live there. I can deal with the DRY heat but the tourist economy only and lack of natural resources scare me. Maybe i'm a bit nuts, but when the fit his the shan , I'd be a bit worried about lack of water in the area. Or, since it's all touristas paying for it, the smallest blip in the economy would slow LV down a lot.

I could guarantee that my driveway would have a 90s Cherokee and a 90s Crown vic!

i just got back from 4 days there to look around. houses are going up now. After so many years of the PNW weather, i love the sun and dryness. when i left yesterday it was 80 and when i got off the plane home, it was 40 and raining.

This is porbably my 30th time to LV. Everyone that i speak to that is a local tells me that they don't visit the strip unless its for showing freinds around or a concert.

as to gambling, its no big deal. If people want to gamble, there are casinos in 48 states so if one really had gambling problems, they don't really need to go to LV for a fix.

I went and visited most of the gun shops. Them F/A places are making a killing offa the tourists.

Our friends said the same. They hadn't been on the strip for long time till they dropped me off. If it wasn't for the tourist I can see they're being no Vegas.. technically according to my phone the strip is in Paradise NV. It's funny flying in you see nothing but dessert and all of the sudden green. Sounds like recipe for disaster to me.

In Vegas again but this time off the strip. Much better not really any different from any other city we've been in the last week and half. Gas prices are much cheaper than anywhere else so far. Lots of nicer casino's off the strip and other places.. been to China Town, both outlet malls and one other. Lots of other places we'd like to see but frankly we're tired and heading back east tomorrow. Should see the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon tomorrow.

Sounds like you hit a lot of the high points. Vegas is quickly becoming known for more than slot machines. Lots of different things to do here.

Hoover Dam is something I'd love to see.

Maybe in 10 - 20 years we'll get around to it.

in 1999 i flew in for a one day thing, dropped $2,000 on the strip and swore id never EVER go back.. still havent. Became a fan of vacationing in the smokey Mt's instead.. when my kids are older i plan on doing a National Lampoons trip and going and seeing the west, all the big highlights.. but thats probably going to be 15 years from now. I made my donation to LV, im good for awhile.

Yeah I think everyone else has figured it out.. It was packed! One neat thing is there's a parking area next to the airports runway the boys loved watching the planes. Hoover dam was awesome didn't see it all yet since the boys are to young.

Smokey mountains are next years agenda.
