For my wife's 2010 Mazda 6 with 2.5L, mostly short trips with a 30+ mile freeway run mixed in once or twice a month, on pace to average about 7K to 8K a year.

Background - Changed out FF at 2.5K to PYB. Changed to PP at 5K with 5K OCIs, all with PureOne or Bosch Premium oil filters. I already have a jug of PP and Bosch Premium filter for the 15K oil change coming up. I've also been using a bottle of Techron every 5K right before the upcoming oil change. I've been purchasing oil and filter and Mazda dealer has been performing the service for $9. Manual recommends 5K OCI for "severe" service and 7.5K for "normal".

My question - at 20K, I am considering going to PU and a Bosch Distance Plus filter and going to 7.5K or 1 year (whichever comes first) OCIs. Any issues with this theory or should I be ok? I've never performed a UOA on this vehicle and don't really plan to unless symptoms arise that would indicate a need.

Nope. My mother has done the same for years. The long drive, IMO is key.

We did it by carefully increasing using UOA to tell us it is OK. Id recommend you do the same, dont think youll have an issue though.

As long as the car is under warranty, I would follow the manufacture's recommendation. Does it have a month OCI recommendation, ie 3 months/5k miles, 5 months/7.5k which ever comes first kind of thing or just mile intervals?

I didn't even think about that. I just checked and it recommends 4 months or 5K OR 6 months or 7.5K. I'm not sure I agree with that, but as long as it's under warranty I guess my Bosch Premium PP 5K OCI will work just fine. I thought I had a good idea with the PU and Bosch Distance Plus at 7.5K, but too much time would lapse according to Mazda's recommendations.

There you go... that plan for a 1 year OCI would have been fine but just wait 'til the warranty is up just to be safe. You could just use PYB and that would hold up fine. You are taking good care of your vehicle.

Sounds like a plan.....PP with a 5K OCI....while under warranty.

PP and the Bosch Premmium for 5K....IMO is a perfect combination.

What's the big deal with warranty this, warranty that. Who cares?!

your choice of oil and the interval is only related to the engine and lube related problems ONLY. If you have a bumper to bumper warranty, everything is still covered. The only way you'd be at the dealer with engine lube related problems is if you start BLINDLY running 20,000 mile intervals with a cheap synthetic and oil filter.

If supported by a UOA, and your driving style / conditions support it, a longer oil change interval with a proper oil / filter combo would be PERFECT!

The factory recommended OCI is based on Mazda's oil, filter and a need to safely recommend an interval for EVERYONE, in many different parts of the country with all kinds of driving styles / conditions.

Like someone before, i highly recommend you use a UOA to guide you towards a PERFECT and SAFE oil change interval based on your driving style / conditions and the HIGH QUALITY OIL and filter you'll be using along with it.

FOR EXAMPLE... say the PP or PU you'll be using still has a TON of life left in it after 5k miles to last a year and 2x the mileage. Why would you drain?
