Spastic Gas Prices

We see 50-60 cent price jumps in a single swoop here all the time, always driven by Speedway. I was hoping the new Sheetz station would keep them in line better but a new co-worker is from NE Ohio and said that's not their game either. It did work for the 1st month after they opened and priced their 87 about 50c lower than the going rate and then the nearby stations (Speedway, Shell, Kroger, etc) matched them.

~0.30$ difference here per day, I live a 20 mins drive from both the exelon and citgo refineries in IL. Currently sitting an average of $4/87oct.

people that say they drive something fuel efficient and don't care about fuel prices, don't understand economics and supply chain cost.
they will when they are paying $10 for a gallon of milk or five dollars for eggs.

The fuel price here of 87 finally dropped to about $3.49-$3.55 at the most competitive stations. That was more than a week ago. Commodity prices dropped a little more, but they all jacked prices up about $.10 this week.

Pa. may have the highest real total gas taxes in the US. The last 4 new tax increases placed on gas in Pa. were technically assessed at the distribution level. 3 of them in a period of only 4 years were approximately 11% each. Two or three years later they snuck one more in as a hidden rider on some unrelated New Years Day bill. When they list the amount of Pa. state gasoline tax, they "accidently" do not include those distributor taxes in the total. Of course, every penny is passed to the retail customer. When gouging is not rampant, I can predict the Pa. pump price by adding $1.10/gal to the next commodity market contract price. That's about $2.39/gal at this moment.

OP, what's the predominant oil company in your region? Speedway?

A while back it was "common knowledge" that gas stations made 2 cents profit per gallon on gas, and the real money was in the convenience store. But now, by me, I can get 87 at a little 2-pump independent for $2.95 while everyone else is still $3.29-3.59. There's profit-making (I won't call it gouging) at the store level, absolutely.

I think it's more about total impact to personal budget. In my case, my monthly gas spending accounts for about 1.5% of my total budget, so doubling gas prices has way less of an impact than groceries going up by 20%, for example.

Anyone else live in an area with wild fluctuations in gas prices? Mine were 2.59 yesterday and today 3.49. This is a common occurrence and happens almost twice a month. Most all local stations jump at the same time and slowly come back down over a period of ten days. Towns located 100 mi away are not affected. This has been going on for over a year now. Profit taking, misinformation, who knows.
Just strange.

Yeah from $3.19 on last Thursday by Tuesday it jumped to $3.49. What gives?

It's hovered around $5/gal here for a bit. This is like the first time I've got gas in 6+ months lol.

The nearest Krogier was down to $3.459 today, which was handy since we had .60 in fuel points to use and both the Forster and the HAH needed fuel.
Took 26.5 between them for a bit over one thousand miles, so not too awful.
Without fuel points, I would have been at $2.949 at BP with BP Visa discount.
Gasbuddy is helpful and so are credit card discounts and things like Speedy Rewards.
End of the day, whatever the reason all we can do is source the cheapest fuel convenient to our location and our typical routes of travel.

I paid $3.89 for rag the other day; that's unbelievable! I'm selling the Tesla! $4.20 and up is typical.
If course there are still $5 prices around.

Costco is my go-to. Been around $3.90 recently. $4.42 for 91*.

They say gas is going down but here it's up 60 cents the last month in 20 cent clips.... ( Maryland )

Yes, it was as high as its been in months here over the weekend, even though oil is at yearly lows.

I think the stations are taking the last kick at the can over the weekend. I paid $2.65 this AM. Was $2.99 there yesterday.

Prices jumped up 60-80 cents about a week and a half ago (in a single day) and have only went down 5-10 cents since.
