Anyone else live in an area with wild fluctuations in gas prices? Mine were 2.59 yesterday and today 3.49. This is a common occurrence and happens almost twice a month. Most all local stations jump at the same time and slowly come back down over a period of ten days. Towns located 100 mi away are not affected. This has been going on for over a year now. Profit taking, misinformation, who knows.
Just strange.

I don’t even look at the price when I fill up—not getting gas is not an option.

Just be happy that it was $2.59? I mean, I want to say my gas has been hovering around $3.30 for some time.

$4.19 has been the lowest I have found in a while. Fueling my body costs more than fueling my car. :p

I look at the price when I push the button. Sometimes it gets a raised eyebrow, sometimes I'm unaffected. I recall variations between 2.69 and 3.79 in the past months. I've stopped being concerned what's causing it because it's a waste of energy worrying about things I can't change. The Exxon station is a quarter mile from my house in the same direction I travel to work, and I can turn on the pump from my phone, so I'm not likely to become one of the people (like my parents) who drive all over town looking for a penny cheaper. I can testify that using the Exxon credit card saves me about $0.12 a gallon over what the QT down the street charges.

We never see that level of price fluctuation in the North AL area. Closest thing I've seen is diesel jumping $.50 one day and dropping back to original price a few days later, but even that is a rarity.

Not by that much, but I have noticed a 30 cent swing weekly is pretty common, and varies by area. Today its 2.95 near my house. In the city its 3.25. Last week it was 3 bucks in the city and 3.30 near my house. Its almost like they draw straws to see which are gets to make money this week.

There is a podcast from "The Economics of Everyday Things" that did a gas station one. Its worth a listen if you can find it.

I agree your title is accurate - spastic gas prices.

Here it usually spike a few days after the wholesale price goes up, sometimes as much as 30¢. Right now RBOB is about $2.40 wholesale. Right now in KC metro were are paying $3.099 most places Costco is $2.969 Not worth the trip just to get gas, as both are about 15 miles away.

I've noticed that the Speedway stations in the area all do a reset Wednesday/Thursday and every station is the same price. In a day or so they start moving around a bit, but it's funny to pull the stations up on the app and see every one is the same price.

Gas is so cheap I cant even remember last time I paid as high as $3.20 a gallon. In our area it's easy to find gas under $3. Right now its in the $2.80 range.
I have seen some swings from let's say $2.85 to $3.10 as an example. All I know is gas is stupid cheap and if it's not cheap near you it's the taxes that the voters in your area allowed to be placed on it.

A jump of almost a dollar/gal in one shot? I couldn't tell you the last time I saw that big of a change in my area.

It's been in the ~$3.50/gal range for a long time in the Buffalo NY area. It goes up and down by 5-10 cents per gallon typically.

Gas prices have gone up here .35 cents/gallon over the past two weeks.
But yea-it costs what it costs.
Was it two years ago during the summer it was pushing $5.00/gallon? I towed my travel trailer up to Boise and Sun Valley. I'm not staying home being manipulated by the Oil Companies.

I mean we have a major driving holiday coming up....it goes up EVERY YEAR during this time.

Supply/Demand/ Yea sure.
