Verify the part number of the iridiums you have in the engine. Many can go 100k miles. But there are some iridiums that are really rated only for 40k miles. Ask me how I know.

How hard is it to do plugs on that vw inline 4?. I'd try to do it myself first.

Change them at the manufacturer's recommended mileage. Replace them with the same spark plugs that the manufacturer used.

Wow. That’s expensive plugs What did you buy and where ?

Autolites. I bought them at AZ, Oreilly, and Advance because no one had more than 5 or 6 in stock. They were all $10.99 a piece +tax at all 3 places.

Not surprised you getting poorer engine performance at 40k miles on the IK20L spark plugs. Yes, they could be fake but ..... A lot of us think that all iridium plugs should last 100k miles, but apparently not so. Denso here below says service life of their IK20L plugs is 30k miles.

The link also says the ground electrode is plain old nickel. It is not padded with a platinum or iridium puck, hence the visible erosion of the ground electrodes in your pictures.
