spark plug trouble - help please

So everything was going well until I put the deep well socket into the spark plug bore, and once I realized that the socket was too big for the plug, it was already too late. The socket is now lodged inside the spark plug well and my ratchet extension can't catch it. I can't get the socket to turn, slide, or budge.

Is there anything I can do with the car in my garage? The engine is a Nissan MR18DE if that matters.

Spray the plug hole with penetrating fluid and get a long screwdriver and try to upright the socket with the screwdriver then pull it out with a magnet. You could possibly use a pair of long tipped needle nosed pliers. Just make sure you use plenty of fluid and proceed carefully.

Proper sized lag bolt screwed into the end. If you can get it to grip it should turn the thing out ..or allow you to attach a slide hammer to it.

An Easy Out of the proper size would do it too. It will be reverse oriented to counter any forced spiraling that you've done.

You can buy locking extensions. I never put my sockets down holes w/o one.

that's a great idea! i really need to buy some of those, they are on my list along with a lot of other stuff.

If you can get a hold of it with pliers, wiggle/pull it as opposed to trying to turn it might be helpful.

I like Gary's slide hammer idea. You can make a "hook" out of an old screwdriver and McGruber a hammer arrangement to pound against the underside of the handle.

Thank you so much for the replies. The idea of using penetrating lube and a screwdriver is what worked. Thanks for saving my engine from having to be run on 3 cylinders down to the shop!

Glad everything worked out. Now go buy some locking extensions. I've got a set from Harbor Freight that have been just fine.

FWIW, Northern Tools has a 3 piece set of 3/8 drive locking extensions for $8.99. They are 3, 6, & 10 inch extensions and have a lifetime warranty.

Put an extension in there and wiggle it around to break it free [leverage].
Loose juice is also a good idea.
