Spanish F/A-18 demo pilot nearly wipes out beach crowd

He was inverted due to the bird ingestion and power loss in one turbine. It happens that quickly.
You sure he wasn’t just keeping up foreign relations? 🤣

I’m not sure that I am buying a “power loss” as explanation for the maneuver.

At relatively high airspeed, like he was, the loss of thrust in one engine causes a modest yaw, and a modest resulting proverse roll. I believe he lost an engine, because only the left engine was in AB as he pulled away - but I do not think that engine failure explains the roll.

I think there was perhaps a roll for bird avoidance, that in retrospect was inappropriate for his altitude and position, and he had to recover from that instinctive (nearly disastrous) roll, but I don’t think the airplane rolled itself - it rolled as a result of lateral stick input from the pilot.

I went to one Blue Angels airshow in my life. The idea of pilots risking their lives to entertain a gawking public with near misses and risky maneuvers just didn't click for me. And if one ever came down on the crowd itself, it wouldn't be pretty.
I never went to another one.
Same here. I went to an air show at what was Martins State Airport. Too much risky stuff. Never went back. A few years later a stealth plane from a show there went down into the parking lot of a nearby marina that was straight off the runway. Lucky no one killed.

Quite familiar with that. Heard that the pilot was extremely apologetic after he dropped in. But it turned out to be a maintenance error from failure to properly reattach a part. I saw an F-117 demo the next month. They determined it wasn’t an issue with any other aircraft.

Crashed into a house following a third low pass at the Chesapeake Air Show at Martin State Airport.
The accident investigation report concluded that the cause of the accident was structural failure of a support assembly, known as the Brooklyn Bridge, in the left wing due to four missing fasteners of the 39 in the assembly. The Brooklyn Bridge assembly was apparently improperly reinstalled during a scheduled periodic inspection in Jan. 1996. The entire fleet of 53 F-117 Nighthawks was inspected during a command-directed precautionary stand down and none were found to have the same defect.
Pilot ejected safely. An unoccupied single-family house in Bowleys Quarters was destroyed in the crash and ensuing fire. At least one other house, a camper, car and a truck also burned.

It’s not as risky as you make it out to be.

That said, it’s not for everyone. If you don’t like loud noises, for example.

I made the mistake of bringing my son’s college girlfriend to an airshow. She had a front row, Flight line, seats, in a chalet at Oceana. A nice tent, providing shade. Catered, with assortment of food and beverage.

It simply doesn’t get any nicer than that. In the shade, seated in a chair, nobody in front of her, with drinks and food, we thought we were offering her a unique opportunity.

But, she had quite delicate sensibilities. She was raised an only child in extraordinary wealth in the Bay Area of San Francisco. She didn’t like cars, or motorcycles, had never held a tool in her life or even actually seen one used. Those things were all for simple workmen, not members of her family.

She didn’t have a driver’s license, and loud noises scared her, but then so did animals. Like small dogs.

For her, it was a wasted effort on my part. The chalet tickets are uncommon and difficult to obtain. She had no idea.

I "hear" that every year, and always have the same concern despite the trust I have with the pilots. Accidents can happen just like anything else in life. I respect that many are interested in the show but that's not for me.

As Astro said, it is VERY LOUD. I was just at my parents' apartment, indoor, far from the coast and almost inside Golden Gate Park. I couldn't do anything for the whole day.

I'm not trying to get all political, but Dianne Feintstein's memorial service was in front of San Francisco City Hall. It was also on a day that the Blue Angels were practicing and the sound came through and interrupted some of the speakers. But she was a fan of Fleet Week (she was instrumental in the first one in 1981 as Mayor) and they noted that she would have approved.
