When a cv joint starts to go it has this clicking/popping sound. Well, I got that but it happens when going straight and get this, its from the rear of the car.

I only notice under 35mph, but that could be since wind and tire noise take over above that speed.

Wheel bearings? A bushings somewhere?

thanks

If we're talking about the Saturn in your sig it could be a lot of things.

The rear brakes are often neglected on a fwd. That's what I'd check first. I've run stock hubs/bearings out to well over 200k miles on those things without a peep.

How would you go about checking them? I've never installed shoes. I did take off the drum before and spray brake cleaner around the springs since the ebrake was sticking.

I only notice it going straight and over a mostly smooth roads with very tiny ripples/bumps. Bumps so small the suspension absorbs most to all of the impact, but still visible. Mostly small cracks.

When turning, I dont notice it, so I ruled out the CV axles. And im pretty sure it is from the passenger rear, but I cannot say for sure it is not coming from the front of the car.

thanks

Would spraying silicone in the places where the anti-sway bar meets the lower control arm where the ball joints are that I may damage if I try to pry or winch the bar from the arm to replace those bushings.

Changed out both rear sway bar end links and both LCAs up front and while it still makes the same noise, it is somehow lessened. Since its needing an alignment I'm going to go ahead and swap the outer tie rod ends this weekend and just let it be.

Is it possible the noise could be the shock mounts? The sound very well could be coming from inside the car. It sounds like it could be in the very area the upper part of the shock mounts to the rear deck of the trunk area.

Ah, thanks for the update. I also suspected that to be a possibility when my replacement CVs started going a few months ago. It was the CVs, but the thought occurred.

Is it possible to tell if an engine mount is going depending on how each mount reacts when revving in the drive way with the hood open?
