Asus mobo. win7. I had usb powered speakers for a little while.soon after, one of the speakers went out,so i decided to buy some powered speakers. All this time it's sounding alright. Now,i get brand new powered speakers, hook them up and only one speaker is audible.I've checked as much as i know on settings and it's the same. And now the sounds sound like if they're coming out of a pipe, quite a bit of echo-reverberation.I connected my usb speakers back and the same [censored] sound. What else can i check?

Try cleaning the contacts on the usb. If possible plug it in via the headphone jack. It may be a loose connection.

If you haven't done so, try disabling/muting the input devices under control panel>sound>recording.

Is this for XP? I have Win7.

That's for win 7. If you see any device in control panel>sound>recording, select each one then click on properties which should open a new window, and in the general tab of the new window, at the bottom there's a device usage menu, if it's enabled, change it to disabled.

Ok, did that, sounds the same, like a cheap p.a. speaker, echoey

Do you have a good set of earphones/headset, use that to plug in to the different audio output ports and see if you hear the same echoing, if yes then the motherboard sound chip might be bad, if not then it might be the speakers/speaker wiring. I'm assuming you've also updated the audio drivers as 91344George suggested.

Also, if the motherboard has surround or multichannel sound outputs, and you plug the speakers into one specific output, you will only get sound for that one channel coming out of your speakers, i.e. if you use the front left output, you only get sound for front left speaker. If your speakers uses only one plug, I would try plugging that into the output for the headphone/headset on the computer.
