Sony Vaio Laptops..

Hi guys!


I ran across a pretty good deal for what is now my second sony laptop. Seems pretty nice, as it's part of their F series. Looks to be around 4 ish years old (based on the reviews). Runs good...model is Vaio pcg-81311L.

But I have a few questions (maybe someone has one). Weak point to this guy seems to be the battery (drains quick). So, 1) where would be a good place for a replacement, and 2) is there a possible upgrade?

Windows 7 seems nice and clean, and added bitedenfender as it's Av. Anything else that would be wise to add? (malbytes?) Gotta say, I like the growing keyboard....not a bad deal for 25 bucks....

My kids each had a Viaos [top of the line ones] several years ago and both didn't last.

Look up the passmark value for the CPU chip. You want at least 2000, and 3000 would be what I would want buying something today.

New LiIon batteries are expensive. I read somewhere that almost all the aftermarket replacement batteries for a phone were not as good as the original.
 
Weird
I use a desktop 90% of the time for many reasons.
I never use my laptop after I got an Amazon Fire Tablet.
I actually hate the laptop now

Well, Sony sold off VAIO... Not sure if Sony would have replacement packs. The problem is the OEM Bat. Pack is always good. Aftermarket you are taking chances. Like DSLR batteries, the OEM packs work so much better than aftermarket.

I would send the pack out to a reputable rebuilder... Or find a OEM Sony pack that has not been setting on the shelf forever....

I got a Sony VAIO E 17" model, it has a battery save mode(only charges to 80% to extend battery life) I use mine as a desktop replacement, didn't want to buy a PC then a power backup, so I just bought a laptop. Since VAIO is no longer under Sony, finding replacement parts would be more challenging.

I would send the pack out for a rebuild.

Thats great our company tried them about 6 years ago and results were not so great.
 
Seems to be nothing but aftermarket out there as I have been shopping around a bit for the batteries...

Way too many choices as well....

With some of the no name batteries from china, yes.


Though not likely with LP batteries....


Also noticed prices are all over the place as well. 25-90 bucks is quite a spread...

Seems Sony does not make/sell these batteries any more either....

I was given a 10 year old VAIO laptop by a neighbor. They were getting rid of it because it was too old and had become too slow and was never used anymore. Upon booting it up it was indeed very slow and loaded down with pictures and files, etc. I reformatted it, installed a fresh copy of XP (period correct, I'm thinking) and it runs flawlessly. It boots in less than 30 seconds or so and runs everything, within reason, that I throw at it. Aside from a damaged power port and un-chargable battery and the fact that it's rather heavy, it's perfect.

It's fantastic for many of my older games and the display is one of the brightest and boldest I've seen on most any computer, especially a laptop.

I only haven't repaired the charging port and replaced the battery because I have a newer (also several years old) Toshiba laptop on the way that my FIL is getting rid of. I surmise that it must be at least a couple years newer and may have a larger (wider) display.
 
Yeah, this Vaio is strange as it is a bit bigger at 16 instead of 15....maybe more for gaming, but I am not sure. Seems to handle everything I throw at it so far with ease after I cleaned it up good....
 
I have a 6 year old 17.3" Dell that I love. Obviously I don't travel with it, but the bigger form factor sure is nice to use.

Yeah, must say the bigger screen is growing on me....
