Sometimes it cranks 2 or 3 times, then starts?

Weird. I notice that, after sitting for a couple/few hours.. Sometimes, I come to the 2000 Volvo V70 XC and I turn the key.. and it turns over, turns over... seems strong, but won't start. I fo this for about 5 seconds, maybe 10. Then I give it a rest. Sometimes it starts right up (weakly, the RPMs take a couple seconds to go from zero to 1000RPM, which is its idle) .. sometimes, it will AGAIN turn over, turn over, turn over.. and THEN start, the third time.

Other times, it starts up at virtually the first turn of the key. And most of the time, it goes whir-whir-whir-WHOOM *start. (Cranks three times.)

Any ideas?

Check fuel pump pressure. These things are touchy, even 5-6 psi low can affect cold starts. Chased this same symptom on my Dads' car for weeks. Mechanic insisted it was the fuel pump and he was right.

Next ice cold start, try this proceedure:

Turn ignition to ON position, but do not start.
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn ignition to OF position.
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn ignition to ON position.
Wait 5 seconds.
Start car.

If easier, then you have an issue with the fuel system losing pressure overnight. You should also listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump priming during these 5 second periods.

BC.

The tool is on the way. I might also get that one that will let the Android phone read it.

Surely, I am going to post up every code. I also know it has an EVAP code, from when Advance scanned it last and said. (They also said catalytic converter, and "left bank running lean." This from memory.)

I think I used to hear some kind of "buzzing" which seemed to start at some point, and perhaps quieted but I never really knew what it was. Could be coming from the dash/front, though.

I will do this tomorrow, the procedure. Also, when I get the tools that read live data, and codes.. Will report!

I thought you had autozone do it. They read them for free. No way Id be paying for readers, especially bluetooth readers and all sorts of fancy stuff (let alone a smartphone) when you cannot aford to do the important repairs that others have stated to perform many times.

That type of reader comes in handy for lean codes on a car that uses a MAF sensor because you can look at the fuel trim data and get an idea of what's causing your lean codes. When the STRIM and LTRIM add up to a big positive number, that's where your problem should be (assuming nor misfires). The quick and dirty version is that in general:

-High trim mainly at idle: vacuum leak
-High trim all the time and pretty steady: low fuel pressure or dirty MAF
-High trim maxed out all the time but seems to run OK: oxygen sensor problem
-High trim maxed out all the time, feels sluggish, hard starting: coolant temp sensor problem or fuel pump nearly dead
-High trim during hard acceleration: fuel filter or foreign object in MAF

Edit: In that last one I'm not suggesting a fuel filter jammed in the MAF sensor, but a restricted fuel filter or smaller object stuck in the MAF.

I am selling that smartphone because I am starting to see that I should have never bought it.

There is a check valve on this car, might be part of the fuel pump, to keep pressure in the rail...sounds like yours is leaking... Not an immediate priority, just give the pump time to pressurize before cranking the engine...

So why are you moving your contacts into it? Sheesh.

You should consider doing the same with your car. It's become an endless money pit (as many people predicted). You'd be much better off with something like an old crown victoria-at least you'll have something less likely to dollar you to death.

I have always had an craving to buy an ex Police Crown Vic and drive it from one side of the US to the other.

Boot is tiny for the size of car going by the pictures I have looked at online, but even for those of girth there is a lot of room up front, and I include myself in that list!

I would suggest it would be cheaper to repair as it is a US built car with a long production run.

Might have been too much money, though it might be difficult to find one that was completely worn out from abuse and serial bodging. And therefore be a total money pit.

Perhaps instead of a nice ex Police car direct from service it would be better to buy and ex Taxi that has been run into the ground for the last 6 months of its working life.

IIRC, from the previous thread, the 900lb woman doesn't fit in a Crown Vic or something to that effect.....
