Not sure if AA "Total Grip" makes a cartridge filter...sort of goes against their whole "Total Grip" marketing

That is by design. Notice the tip of the oil filter with the o-ring on it? That plugs a hole at the bottom of the oil filter housing. When you remove the filter, that hole is no longer plugged and the oil drains out.

I'm assuming it works that way too; in my mind I picture it to be a lot like "popping the cork" when the filter is removed and the oil drains out from the filter bore. I may be wrong however.

After 98,000 miles I'm looking at getting a new Filter Cap because the top edges of mine are starting to wear down from all the screw on/offs. One of these days I'm gunna strip that thing if I don't replace it soon. The plastic is just wearing away.

I've seen a few that look like someone tried to chew the filter cap off; the reason is because its too easy to get the socket seated a little crooked on the filter cap and thus it cuts a groove into the plastic each time. The intake manifold runners crowd the socket and cause this to happen. The solution is to buy the "low-profile" socket made by Lisle Tools (and others) which won't interfere with the manifold runners.

By the way I use the Purolator Pure One filter, which I get for 1 cent each at Pep Boys when purchased with a coupon and a mail-in rebate. Just added four more to my stock yesterday (regular price is $9something each).

Just an update for the thread.

With the supertech oil filter, I was getting a dryknock startup sound every time I started the motor when cold.

With the fram filter the sound is gone totally.

Take that for what its worth. The filters look very similar.

I have noticed that rockauto sells an acdelco kit that includes a new cap, o ring, and filter for 9 dollars and change.

Mine still rattles on startup with the Fram.

Even on a warm startup I get that 'dry' start sound. Oh well.. 6400mi and counting on the ODO. My OLM still reads 46%! I'll try the Super Tech filter next and I'm considering running 5w-20 oil.

I've noticed a very brief (about a second or so) cold start rattle with the AC Delco filter and Pennzoil Platinum.

I didn't notice the rattle with the AC Delco filter and Castrol Syntec.

BTW, I have a 2.4 VVT Ecotec.

On my 07 2.2 I'll be darned if I could/can even pick out the slightest tick using the OEM filter either from the FF, then 5w30 PP and now on Amsoil XL 5w30.

Just lucky I guess.

I have been using OEM AC Delco filters on my 2007 ION w/2.2 for its first four oil changes. (old Havoline 5w30, Conoco 5w30, can't remember, and just changed to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30).

Havn't noticed any unusual startup noise whatsoever so far. Just turned over 15k miles.
