Hey guys. I was did a bunch of maint and and detail on a '96 red Mazda Miata. Not having any really Mazda experience, did these older cars or at least the red have any paint issues? I clayed this car, and grabbed my wheel to hit it with some mild cleaner wax as could not believe how much red was pulling out of the paint onto my pad. Enough that I was worried that it was going to rub through (I saw a rub through mark on the front edge of the decklid) So out of curiosity I grabbed a wax pad and some finish wax and rubbed it a little and even that pad was turning red. I've never seen paint come up like this. The car does not seem to be painted, it still has the factory decals on the fenders and whatnot.

It is a single stage paint job. Some of the paint will come off when you polish it. If it is slightly oxidized, the more paint will come off. Even some modern cars today a single stage painted.

I don't know about single stage painting but that mazda has probably no clear coat. Also mazda paint is pretty soft I know because my dad had a mazda. At least soft paint won't chip as easily as hard paint!!!
