So what is wrong with Purolator's Domed end?

I guess it allows the bypass oil to pass over the dirty side of the filter element which allows it to pick up crud along the way back into your engine?

IMO, nothing. There are many more filters in the world with dome end bypass valves then ones with base end bypass valves.

Keep in mind that when oil if flowing through the filter media that the flow is keeping the debris trapped on the media and most of the debris is trapped deep down in the pleats. This is happening even when the filter is in bypass mode.

If you use a good filter and change it regularly (ie, don't over extend the OCI for that filter) then I don't see much concern on where the bypass valve is placed.

Silt. On a vertical mount filter ..if you're going to have stuff falling out, it's going to end up at the bottom, just like it does on a fuel filter. Then when you start and if and when the bypass opens, it may sweep that stuff in. That's the Ford Engine Division's paraphrased rhetoric on it via the assembly line OEM producer of their filters.

Since not to many of us find stuff in the bottom of our filters, it's either well founded in terms of process but undetectable to us, or it's not occurring for members here who cut open their filters.

The filter on my car is horizontal mount, which is why I'm alright with a dome end bypass. The magnet stuck on the end should catch most of the ferrous particles before they go through the valve.

If the filters I cut open are any clue they have a filter magnet on the dome end and caught a little but not much and they are vertical mount.

Ford specifies thread end. GM puts it in the block. Why pay the same price or more for a filter with a dome end if you can find a thread end for the same or less.

But what thread end filters as good as a Purolator Pure One or Bosch brand for the same money?

Once again with millions sold over all these years I would think that if their research/development discovered an issue it would have been redesigned.

I have e-mailed Purolator/Bosch for their input.

napa gold has threaded end bypass where applicable, and it is a top notch filter.

As compared to the current Classic, the Champ Ecores, Motorcraft, the low end Clarcors, and maybe even some Wix products may be as cheap.

If there was an issue with cardboard end caps, are you sure Fram would have redesigned them?

If there was truly an issue with the cardboard then Yes.

No one ever says there was a problem with them falling apart. It is just that it looks cheap compared to the metal endcaps.

**I was talking the Pureone or Bosch Premium compared to WIX. Wix makes a great filter but the filtration rate for the Pure One/Bosch premium is higher. For close to the same money (maybe a couple bucks) I would chose the better filtration rate.

Response from Purolator:

Both by-pass valve designs have their own distinct advantages, however Purolator Classic/PureONE designs do not deprive the engine of the required volume/quantity of oil under the extreme startup conditions specifically in cold temperatures.

Regarding your concerns on the dome end-by pass valve design filters, I would like to clarify that the filter's media pores retain most of the dirt/contaminate. If the filter is not changed, and is already exceeding its life of change interval, the by-pass valve may stay open and circulate the dirt in the system. This is true for the other design with having thread end by-pass valve.

Best regards,
Brian

Nice response from Purolator's ever responsive CS department. IMO, dome end/thread end is much ado about nothing. Purolator makes both designs, thread end with Motorcraft.

Gary Allan and Busa both think it's no biggie either way and I agree with them.

I will continue to buy and use Pure Ones and other Purolator made oil filters.

If you don't like the domed end just whack it with a hammer a couple of times and flatten it out...problem solved!
