I use the Napa HM 10W30 and a ProSelect filter. I get exactly the same performance, wear and MPG as I got with Maxlife 10W30. For nearly $2.00 less per quart, the Napa brand oil works great for me. If it really is any different from Maxlife, I don't notice it. I may just send it in for a UOA soon to see the results.

Thank you, sparkplug, for refreshing a topic that has been discussed here several times since BITOG started in 2002. It needs to be brought back to life every few years.

Back then, the answer was essentially the same. The NAPA product is inferior (lesser) to the Valvolene.

Since this board obsesses about finding the BEST oil, it is interesting to see that some knowingly choose a lesser oil while others will do a 3,000 OCI with a synthetic oil. In both cases, the cost of oil is a factor. Personally, I think that the oil expense is tiny relative to the other overall costs of vehicle ownership and I don't worry too much about saving $3 or $4 dollars per OCI (within reason).

There was a time here when Valvolene was bashed to the extent that the group think/sheep mentality swayed most away from it. Now it is coming back to battle with YB Pennzoil for BITOG supremacy.

Strange thing was I was in my local Napa this weekend buying gear oil and saw that he is honoring the $3.29 sale on the Napa Syn. What struck me as odd or maybe typical is that he had used an inkpen and crossed out the $3.09 on Napa HM and raised it to $3.79. He had the regular $2.09 price on the Napa dino.

I guess when one oil is on sale he has to recoup his losses on the sale price by raising prices on another oil. Especially in today's economy. Maxlife syn blend was still $5.19 per quart.

None of this will deter me from using the Napa brand oil though. For me, I get the same results with it as I did with Maxlife at a lower price.

3 out of 4 vehicles I have/look after, take 5 quarts synthetic for an oil change. I usually have a supply of oil ready for each vehicle, either through an Advance Auto Synthetic Sale, or a 5 quart Walmart jug. Using different synthetics in each (Synpower, Q Horsepower, Mobil 1).

Since Napa is made by Valvoline, I'll assume it's ok to top off the Valvoline with Napa Synthetic (if necessary). But what about the other brands? I was thinking of getting a few quarts as back ups, just in case. I'd rather spend $3.29 a quart, than $6+ to use as top off oil. Or should I stick to the same brands for each?

Hey do you have any UOA's comparing both oils (ML and Napa HM)? So is the Napa HM a sny blend too? I've been using their dino Napa dino oil when I was able to score some for .99/qt. My stash is almost gone so I would love to see the difference between ML and Napa HM. I did notice in a VOA that the Napa oil has less additives than Valvoline.

I did go to Wally World and buy three 5qts jugs of Havy DS. I don't know much about that oil but it was on sell so I purchased it. Can't be any worse than the Napa oil I've been using.

I am sure they exist but I have never seen a UOA on any of the Napa oil, other than one on the Napa Synthetic that is buried somewhere in the UOA page. It's good info to read but I really don't get all the technical specs discussed in UOA's yet. I use the Napa HM because I get the same great MPG, wear and performance results and from it as I did with Maxlife and it costs less than Maxlife too.

I posted a while back in the PCMO gas forum about it in a post called "I am convinced". And I am convinced the Napa and Valvoline are the same oil, a synth blend. I personally believe all the hype about the "lesser add packs" is just put out there so Valvoline and everyone who sells it makes more money. Others here will disagree.

Napa HM and ProSelect filters have been working great for me and I see no reason to change.

In some ways, what Jimmy9190 states about Napa and Valvoline being the same makes sense. I just can't begin to understand why a reputable co like Ashland would produce a lesser quality product only because its in a Napa bottle? Their name is still on it.

My local NAPA didn't have a single bottle of the Synthetic on the shelf. I had called them earlier that day and they said they had a couple of cases in the back. When I showed up the guy went in the back and brought out the case and on the case it read SPECIAL on the box. I guess they wanted to keep it a secret.
