So far, what would you say about our UOA's?

So far, in your opinion, what oils have consistantly put up the best wear values? We have a good selection now to really see what are the top oils. It's hard to say with all the UOA's in different cars, but I'd say it's the usual Schaeffer's, Amsoil Mobil 1 crew. I really think Amsoil puts up great wear values, even though I knock it a lot for TBN depletion and sometimes viscosity change. Schaeffer's puts up incredible numbers too. I'm looking forward to 3MP's study.

What would I say? For starters, this should have been posted in the UOA section of the board.

This is a really stupid thread now that I think about it and will only cause more bickering. None of us tend to agree anyway and it seems like it's something that really can't be answered at this point. Fogetta about it..

Buster, I'm going to answer that question with a single word; inconclusive. I was a bit frustrated that it was difficult to tell if a specific oil was shown to be superior, and I wanted to at least be confident that synthetic was superior to mineral, so I went through all postings and roughly compared mineral to synthetic. My conclusion; there is no clear evidence, based on the things that can be measured in a UOA, that synthetics are any better than mineral in reasonable drain intervals. Reasonable being roughly 4-5000 miles.
It's still early in the existense of Bob's site here, so perhaps in time, some conclusive evidence will become available.

Since few if anyone uses a mineral beyond the 5000 mile mark it is probably difficult to look at longer OCIs and see if synthetic makes a difference?

That is definitely an accurate statement, and I want to believe that if there were long drains done on mineral oils then synthetics would prove to be superior. Since my earlier opinion was in reference to street driven vehicles, the other are of concern would be racing, with a street car or race car. I have some pretty good evidence that M1 10w30 does superbly when raced on in a street legal Subaru WRX, that Amsoil 10W-40 does almost as well, and that S2K 20W-50 is inappropriate in this car. Like I mentioned before, while we do have a significant archive of UOA's here, it will be some time before we have enough to really draw sound conclusions.

nicrfe, I agree entirely with your posts. It's just a bit too early.

That's kind of an arbitrary way to define "reasonable." It almost seems like you're defining "reasonable" to be "those intervals typically used for dino oil," which is kind of a circular argument. It seems to me that if synthetics generally perform well for 8-10,000 miles, then that is a reasonable interval for those oils, and defining "reasonable" any other way is wordplay.

Given that most manufacturers call for a 7,500-10,000 mile interval for normal service these days, I think it's a bit odd to classify that as outside the "reasonable" range.

Maybe the word you're looking for is "traditional." Or perhaps "superstitious."

Perhaps the fact that there are so few dino reports in excess of 5000 miles answers the question.

My latest post http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000211;p=2 at the bottom of the page has blends and minerals. I've been doing intentional changes to show just exactly this point you asked.
