Do the new ratings effect Dino oil also. I run havoline ds and was wondering if they will have to change the oil to meet the new specs.

Change is not always better. Many would argue that SM is not as good as SL.

GF5 oils should be out Q3 this of this year.

But IMO some of the quality oils we have today already meets or exceeds SN.

We would hope. I'd be pretty sure it is going to make oils more expensive. I'm also not sure if these new oils will be better for older engines either. Right now all we have are opinions, no real world data from actual use.

^^this is why I do. The Camry's oil cap says SG! The neon was using M1 colored jug caps when I bought it, that was SL? The Ranger is powered by the same unchanged engine used in 1980's Aerostars. My stash isn't hurting me :) Bought and paid for

Hopefully they would only make that argument in the context of certain applications.

And they would be wrong. They just automatically assume that because SL had higher ZDDP levels, that SM was a step backwards, but there is so much more to an oil than just it's ZDDP levels.

The only reason that I have a large oil stash is due to closeouts, sale w/rebate, FAR...My most recent score(s) were, 30 qts of PEAK oil w/6 filters, FAR and, 10 qts of PP, @ .32c/qt after AAP $10 coupon and $15 Penz Rebate. And the PP was already on sale @ $4.99/qt to start with. Im not passing up a deal. I usually try to find closeouts on oil(held in high reguard here @ BITOG), where I can buy up the shelf for around .50-.75c/qt(dino or syn).

If they close the gap any more,it wont be worth it to spend the extra money on synthetic. I`m wondering if it`s worth it now?

At full retail price the higher cost of Synthetic oil may not be worth it, but when you can get synthetic for under $2.50 a quart on sale, the choice should be a no-brainer. When the synthetic goes past $5 a quart, I start to look for alternatives. But fortunately I have not had to due to the recent rebates.
