Hi:

I picked up an LG smart phone, and it came with a plug in charger that has an output of five volts at 1.8 amps.

My old charger for another phone has a five volt at one amp output. I assume it is OK to charge with this old charger, though charging time will be longer. I want to use the old charger for longer periods such as when I am asleep for five hours or so.

Am I correct?

Yes, you can use the old charger without any problems at all. As you said, it will only charge slower.

If you plugged in via USB (like to get photos off it) you could get either fast or slow amperage, and the phone maker compensates for this.

Absolutely. I mix chargers all the time. The worst that ever happens is a compatibility issue, which just means the phone defaults to a really low current draw (e.g. 100-200 mA). But even in that case, it still works, just slowly. 100% safe and perfectly functional otherwise.

It won't HURT anything... BUT it may not charge, either. Just verify in use that it works. Some LG models are fussy and won't even charge without high enough amperage chargers. I know this from personal experience.
