small vs. large oil filter in cold weather

How does the size of the oil filter effect oil supply at cold start-up? In other words if you use the smaller size Honda OE filter vs. the bigger s2000 vs an oversize (22458 Purolator) does the larger filter help get oil up faster because of the larger capacity of oil in the filter or slower because the filter has to fill up before it gets to the engine. Does the smaller filter get oil up a little faster because it takes less oil to fill it up etc...

As long as the ADBV is working properly, the oil should get to the needed areas in the same amount of time. Ideally, oil is a liquid and is therefore non compressible.

If you do notice a time difference in oil pressure between size of the filter, it's because one of them leaked past the ADBV, (or somewhere else in the filter for that matter), not the size of the filter.

In my experience, most filters will hold most of their oil for at least a week. The few times I did notice my filters draining out, it was because of a bad ADBV, not the size. Further, it's happened with different brands, some of supposedly high quality, in a very infrequent and random fashion.

If I had unusual startup noise, the first thing I'd check is if the filter is holding it's oil overnight.

One other note, I have noticed that filters mounted to the engine with the threaded end down are more susceptible to leaky ADBVs.

i keep hearing from Honda dealer that new smaller filter has higher pressure and get oil up faster. how does it works?? thanks..

As 427 said, with a working ADBV, the size shouldn't make any difference. I have chopped open a bunch of filters and looked at many reports here. There is no relationship between a filter's external size and the amount of media inside and area tells us nothing about quality. The new, smaller filter could have a better ADBV, better media, and even more of it. It could also trade efficiency for flow. It could also have a lower bypass pressure. Chop one of each open and let us know what you find.

Never?
Even though you may find a smaller filter will sometimes have more media than a larger filter, I think you'll find that is the exception, not the rule.

I had heard something to this effect also and that is the reason I started this post. I would have thought that a larger filter would give a little more oil at start up.
