Used to be that engine wear protection was what the oil brands seemed to focus on but now we hear a lot of marketing buzz talking about sludge as the main threat to engine longevity. Mobil 1 even claims that their HM synthetics clean sludge....I was always taught that oil, even synthetic, doesn't remove existing sludge or deposits but a high quality syn will keep more from forming. Can today's HM synthetics really clean - actually clean an engine like they seem to be claiming?? Oil galleys, sump, pick up screens, upper end, etc????

Blame Toyota and the sludge monster 1MZ-FE used in the Camry V6/Avalon/Solara V6/Sienna/ES300/RX300.
Oil does clean. There is no question about it. You can take a motor with heavy soft deposits due to negligence, do a couple of quick OCIs with ordinary conventional oil, and it will clean itself right up.
Hard deposits are different.

Agreed...I think the additive pack is what counts, not the base oil (although I could be wrong??).
There are quite a few on this forum who have had good results with Mobil 1 cleaning up (or keeping clean) their motors.

There are quite a few on this forum who have had good results with Mobil 1 cleaning up (or keeping clean) their motors.
Varnish deposits are also cleaned up by regular oil changes with conventional oil. I've seen it in three engines so far, but it seems to take several years. Some deposits soften and slowly dissolve, while others slowly break away in little flakes.

Newer oils are more advanced in deposit control. While they do disrupt existing film formations in their seating process, I feel that this is the limit of their "cleaning action". The more aggressive (Oggressif- Crock Hunter RIP) the add pack, the more disruption of existing formations.
Using conventional oil in an "exceed the need" manner ..get oilyriser's observed results (YMMV)...
..use something like Bruceblend® 0w-20 LITE ..and it can work rather quickly.

Yup, M1, although often ridiculed for the iron thing, does do an exceptional job of keeping things clean in my experience.
