Alright, I am tired of people asking.

UNDER APPROPRIATE MAINTENCE SCHEDULES OIL SLUDGE WILL BE A MINIMAL RISK

In other words, know your vehicle, know your driving, know your maintenance interval!

I can't stress this enough! Synthetic Oil, Conventional/Dino, and Synthetic Blends can and may SLUDGE under poor maintenance.

Hypothetical Driving Examples Include but are not Limited to:
99% Highway 1% City on flat land will be a longer OCI
99% City 1% Highway Stop and Go uphill both ways towing a School bus wil be a SHORT OCI
50% City, 50% Highway, will be a middle ground OCI!

This isnt hard! LOL

Now that I am done, I shall end this rant. This is also due in part to hearing an Old Man at walmart yell at the Service Dept that "Quaker State is just sludge in a bottle! I drive this 2010 Ford Focus and I want Shell Rotella 10w40 in it with only 30k Miles on vehicle that is Reccomended 5w20"

I just wanted to smack this guy. SMH.

Make this a sticky if you will. I am done.

Haha.. I have used Quaker State Advanced Durability 5w20 in my Civic and its' smooth as glass and the engine is spotless inside. Definitely sludge in a bottle though. Sigh.

I used to work at a Walmart Tire and Lube Express. Had a LOT of people snarl at me about how much Pennzoil conventional was junk, and I was too stupid to understand that.

Had aREAL issue with a guy with an old VW Golf that wanted GTX 20W-50 in it. We wouldn't do it, b/c it was not called for...he ended up getting the store manager involved, lecturing her on how much we didn't know, and he was a VW mechanic, and maybe if we listened, we'd learn something...

You have to laugh after a while, or you'll go over the counter at these people and throw them through the bay doors.

I remember back in late 80's & early 90's, 20w50 was THE oil to use for any car. the guy I worked for always put 20w50 in. even if we put 5w30 in, he'd still put 20w50 on the invoice.

for a guy like that make them sign a waiver then put the 20w50 in it.. end of story..

oh wait walmart wont mount any tires that arent factory size either....

(ie 265/75r16 instead of 245/75r16 on a ford ranger)

Yep, happened to be in a WM when a fight similar to that broke out too...

Back in the late 60s through the late 70s there was some truth to this and since you said "old man" (which I assume to be 60+) he may have been victim to sludge provided by QS.

Before I am dogpiled, I can unequivocally state that I have seen both GM and Ford engines that were maintained according to the OEM specifications back then that became sludge monsters using QS. I am talking about 1/4" to 3/8" thick, dark brown creamy or crusty crud under the valve covers, lifter galleys, and crank/pan areas. Sometimes there is some truth to a myth...(but that does not apply today!)

I got away with it at Walmart because I had OEM 15 inch alloys on a Toyota which came with 14s from the factory. I just told them the car had the 6, which CAME with 15's. Did they look under the hood??? NO!

I had my car held hostage at a walmart, they got it up in the air and pulled the tires off before they realized I had the wrong size tires.

That was a fun 3 hours.

I deal with this everyday working at a parts counter. Its annoying to hear from coworkers give a recomendation on oil weight to customers only based on mileage their vehicle has.

I had a kid come in for parts saying that he has learned working at a quick lube shop that he does not trust any oil except castrol. His proof was putting castrol and pennzoil of same weight into a cup and convinced pennzoil was junk because it was like water. *facepalm*

I had sludge issues with both my vehicles in the late 80's. Even with 3500k OCI's. Can't remember what oil it was now. I remember the dark green bottle because the plastic ring fell down the oil filler a couple of times. Changing brands resolved the issue.

So Gumby, what is your recommended OCI on Mobil 1 0w40 on a car that does 99% driving in the suburbs at low speeds, traffic lights etc.??

Why are so many people bent out of shape if someone wants to use thick oil? Did you guys ever stop and think that maybe this guy has used this thick oil in all of his vehicles, all his life and had absolutely no issues with it?

I'm all for using what manufacturers spec and educating people that want to be educated, but some people are stuck in their old ways. Whether it's 3k OCIs or using thicker oil, who cares? As far as maintenance is concerned, these people are better off than majority of the driving public out there anyway.

I'll probably catch some flak for this, but I don't care.
Back when I worked for an express lube, there was some (older) guy who would come in and request ANYTHING but Quaker State. I would MAKE SURE he got Quaker State in that engine, despite what it said on the receipt (probably said Pennzoil).

When he would come back for the next OC, he would proudly pull out the dipstick and show us the golden colored oil on it and say "You can tell I don't use Quaker State, huh".

I'd ask "What can we do for you today"?
"Anything but Quaker State"!

I was going to tell him the truth one day, but I left before I could.

First off, thanks to the OP. What he said should be common sense to most of us here; barring that, it should be a sticky for those without common sense.

As for the GTX 20w-50, if this guy was a VW mechanic, why wasn't he changing his own oil? Barring that, why wasn't he going to a VW dealership or an independent European mechanic?
