Sleep Preference: Dead Quiet or Background Noise (white noise)?

I sleep during the day, so I have to have some kind of noise in the background to drown stuff out. The window AC unit is nice, but not quite enough for when the neighbor mows once a day so I wind up wearing ear plugs to make everything silent... When I had a normal routine I preferred complete silence.

We have a brook behind the house and I sleep best when the water is high and I can hear it with the windows open in good sleeping weather (50-65F outside and dry).
Kinda sucks when a fisher screams, though.

Nature's noises are great sleeping! Might take a little getting used to for some.

In hotels with people making noise, the a/c unit running makes a difference.

Outside either of these, quiet is good.

I prefer quiet. I do sleep lightly so white noise can be good to drown out other noises.

I started sleeping with a white noise generator back in the 70's when I started shift work. Now can't sleep without it.

I have to have white noise. If it's completely silent, every little noise will keep me up. If a cat walks by on the other side of the road, I'll hear it and wake up.

I like either dead silent or background noise to cover up fact not dead silent.

I have an app named White Noise Lite on (I)phone I use to cover up noise. Works pretty well and includes a timer to shut it self off.

I always assumed they were insects. Just learned they were frogs a few years ago. Have you ever seen one?

I like a little white noise but dead quiet is fine with me, too.

I have that too (tinnitus).. seems to have gotten worse as I've gotten older. I have trouble hearing the high pitched sounds too.

When I was married I was able to sleep with nothing. Complete quiet. Then when I got divorced and was living alone for 10 years the TV was on 7x 24. For company I guess. Now I'm living with someone and I find myself needing the TV to stay on. And all her kids leave the TV on as well. And she puts a fan on to counter the TV LOL

A fan to drown out the TV... that's classic!...‚

No preference. In the summer, we have the A/C unit going. It's about 30 years old, inefficient, and loud. In the winter, the room is silent. I fall asleep the same either way. I don't get enough hours of sleep (not enough hours in the day) and I'm always exhausted when I get into bed and I fall asleep right away. I'm also a very heavy sleeper.

Don't like dead silence. I have a hepa filter and air conditioner that run. Hepa filter in winter.

I listen to science lectures(quantum mechanics is best). Puts me right out. If I am sleep learning, someday I may just understand it all and ascend to a higher plane.

If not then I fall asleep in the first 5 minutes.

Either way I win

Me x3 with tinnitus.

I have a noise generator that is set on the ocean waves at present. I also enjoy good rainfall while sleeping. Going on 20 years now and I hate dead quiet...but also loathe sharp loud noises. Wish there was a cure....

I use a fan. It helps drown out my redneck neighbors, who misbehave every other night. From gunshots, to fireworks, to airboats, outboards, live music and other distractions.

My house is very well insulated, with double pane windows and insulated bedroom walls. So the fan does the trick.
