SL rated Mobil 1 5w30

I was at Sam's Club picking up some things and decided to breeze by the oil selection. I noticed they had two old cases of Mobil 1 5w30 which I'm assuming was the old SL formula. The bottle design on the box was like this:

Unfortunately the rating is not printed on the box, but if this is the old SL formula, would it hurt to use it now that it has been sitting around for 8+ years? If that's not when the design changed, then about when did it switch over? I ran Mobil 1 in my Honda back in high school, but always used the dealer for oil changes until I got my GTO and started doing my own oil changes again, so I don't remember myself when it changed.

I just searched on Google trying to find more and see this question was my first post way back when I joined. I don't remember posting it, but apparently they've been there and I forgot. Still not sure on the time frame of when it would have been produced.

I have about 30 quarts of SL rated Mobil 1 and the bottle is more square and not curved on the right side in your picture.

So this may be early SM then. Hmmm.. I wish I could check the bottles. I might ask them next time I'm there. From everything I've read it seems pretty well accepted that SL was a pretty beefy add pack compared to SM.

Just open the case and have a look; people do it all the time.

I just put Pennzoil 5W50 SL in my BMW. Paid $1.99 per quart at the supermarket. Much better oil than when car it was made in 1991

Either way I would run it in one of my cars even if it wasn't SL. I should see if I can get a discount for clearing some old oil off their shelves.

My SL 15W50 red-cap bottle is more square than the one in the picture.
