Skyactiv - 10w30 to a 10w50....

Years ago I read an article where a GM engineer said viscosity doesn't matter all that much. You'd never think that based on most peoples perception, however, maybe he's right.

Mazda Skyactiv can run anything from a 10w30 to 10w50.

In other post, I was intrigued by Pennzoil Ultra / Pennzoil Platinum's low NOACK of around 5% for both.

I would run a 5w30....for easier starting in those cold winter mornings in NJ.

Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 would be my choice of oil for your Mazda, with a Fram Ultra Filter.

Of course viscosity matters and if someone says that they do not understand even the fundamentals. I'm guessing the comments of the GM engineer were taken out of context or are missing some info (like for example you can almost always go thicker but thinner has its limits).

I've been running Mobil 1 5w30 the last 8k miles. No complaints. Prior to that EP 0w20.

Tempted to run PU/Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 for that low NOACK of 5%.

Most peoples perceptions aren't correct. There are people that argue about xw-20 not being for EPA CAFE standards.

Years ago, before BITOG, I thought I knew better and "thickerer is betterer" oil for all cars all engines so I used 5W-50 synthetic instead of the recommended 5w30. This was in my 2.0L 4 cylinder Ford Zetec. My gas mileage deteriorated a lot and the car was sluggish. After 2 years of 5W-50 I went back to 5w30 and my gas mpg has improved and car is much more "peppy". My last UOA after around 8,800 miles was sterling using Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. This included many hours of 75-85 mph as well as red line sprints and local driving.

I'm not anti low viscosity at all. Today's 0w20's are great oils, using high quality base oils and additives. Some of the 0w20's have as good of NOACK as some of the 5w30's. For example, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20/AFE.

The only reason to put 10W-50 oil into a SkyActiv-G engine is because you hate high fuel economy, and you want to stick it to your wallet.

My CX-5 gets Pennzoil 0W-20 every 5k miles while it's under powertrain warranty.
If the engine grenades itself in the first 60k miles, I want Mazda NA to pay the bill, not me.

I thought that they suggested their OWN, high moly, MGMO 0W-20 for Skyactiv U.S. based engines, or does that change by model and production year?

(and if not, then WHAT is the MGMO 0W-20 actually for??)

50 is kinda thick use a 20W-50

It's not inconceivable an SAE 50 passing 25W, the answer to your post would have to be which 20W50 vs. which SAE50 above 40F?
