Hello,
I have a old mustang with a 390 and I have recently upgraded the front sway bar. Well when this happened the oil filter was too big a FL-1A and it could not be installed due to the new width of the swaybar. So I went with a smaller diameter oil filter I am not sure of the part number. I believe it is the same filter Ford uses on their Rangers and areostars. So my question is, is this hurting anything? Several people have said it is ok to do this but I wanted to get other opinions. If it is a bad idea I might need to look into getting a filter relocation kit.. Thanks.

We need a filter part number to be able to tell you for sure if it's OK or not.

Also, what year is the Mustang?

An FL400 filter should fit though the gasket diameter is slightly different. But the flange should accomodate it. I run FL1A on the 3.0 V6 that normally should have a FL400. Check to see if the smaller filter has as good of flow. Purolator site I think gives flow. Probably the Wix site too.

What about an angle adapter to angle the filter away from the sway bar?

For extended drains you may want to change the smaller filter midway.
