The car in my signature is on its first oci of Mobil 1 has used about 2.25 quart in 8k (20% oil life). Oil is a light color when it dries on a white napkin after checking it as I would hope after all that make up oil. But if the PCV was bad would the oil still be light in color after 8k?(miles not kilometers)

The oil color has nothing to do with the PCV condition. The PCV might be causing the consumption. Or another PCV problem is it can cause sludge, but both issues are totally different and don't usually go hand in hand. I'd just go to the local GM dealer and replace it with an OEM part and see if the consumption is lowered.

Your consumption can also be normal, or your car prefers a different oil. Confusing?

oil colour is never a good indicator for base oil condition.

Personally, I don't dwell on the colour of the oil, or the condition of the PCV valve. I service them regularly (every 2 yrs, regardless of oil colour or condition) and as a result: none of the engines I've maintained routine PCV servicing has resulted in oil burning issues.

Q.

If you cannot remember replacing the PCV in the past few years, replace it and the grommet. Maybe some hose also.

The PCV is basically a one way valve, so you should be able to blow through it one way but not the other. But pretty dirty to try that.

Does anyone know where the PCV is for sure on this vehicle? It's the 3.5 liter v6. Previous owner used GTX said it used 1 quart in 6k. To my knowledge this is the first this car has seen synthetic. But even for the first oci of synthetic I am surprised the consumption rose that much. A little paranoid maybe.

Should be on one of the valve covers and will have a hose (probably hard plastic with rubber connectors) that runs to the intake manifold most likely, but may actually run farther up to the TB (but def after the MAF).

I had a '94 SHO that consumed lots of oil, and had low hot idle oil pressure using Mobil 1. Switching to GTX slowed the consumption and I never saw the oil idiot light at hot idle again.

Not saying you shouldn't replace your PCV valve (if it has one). But I have noticed differences in consumption based on oil brands/type.

Ok. Thank you. That helps.

Well I pulled off the "elbow" of the pcv hose connected to the intake and looked down I didn't see a pretty sight. Although when I blew through one elbow air came through the other side but not when I blew through the other side which is good from what I understand. But from looking on advance auto website the actual pcv is the part that goes into the valve cover which I did not remove and shake to listen for rattle. How is it removed? Pull on it with pliers? Twist and pull?

I've done that countless times. I've never replaced a PCV pipe before, just kept cleaning them. I've used everything from seafoam to mmo to carb cleaner. Spray it in while the engine is sucking. Simple.
