Should We Buy An Extended Warranty?

My friend has [2] Honda Accords with the V6...Both needed new transmissions and one needed a new engine and both needed to have major work done on the a/c...He did have the extended warrenty and was covered for all of that and was given a free rental.

With are Fords we took out the extended warranty on some [as it did not cost much] but never needed it.

BTW the new Altima looks awesome...You picked the perfect engine for it.

If he has already paid for warranty, chances are he'll use it to its full advantage.

He bought the vehicle and warranty at that dealership too. I bet Nissan pays bumpkus on warranty repair and even lower than bumpkus on extended warranty repairs.

Didn't you try to convince the service dept to tear down the engine on the basis that the UOA showed coolant?

I am not aware of the issue being widespread on VQ35 engines. You simply don't see complaints about that problem on G35driver.

I think there was mention (or maybe just implication?) in the thread on that issue that the issue might be more likely in FWD/transverse applications of the VQ35 given placement of the cats.

I've purchased extended warranties on both my vehicles. My truck is an 06 with 48k miles on it and still has 2.5 years of warranty left. I've used the warranty without issue 4 times. I'm pretty certain that paid for itself. The Honda is yet to be seen. It was reasonably priced IMO, so I went ahead and got it. It was the only thing we added to the purchase out of everything offered.

I think if I were in your situation, I'd get one from Nissan directly - especially if you have a decent dealership to go to.

Just NOT true. This is an isolated failure. Otherwise you would see the class action lawyers at work like the Toyota sludge issues.

One note: If you do get the warranty..you have to follow and document scheduled maintenance or they will void it in a heartbeat. You need to explain that to your Dad before he spends his cash.

Remember, an extended warranty is an insurance policy. If you want the peace of mind, buy one. Having worked for a manufacturer for 28 years, my firm belief is that you should buy the warranty of the manufacturer of your car. There is no question where the warranty is accepted, you will get NEW OEM parts and the dealer knows he will get paid for the repair. I fielded numerous calls from owners who were complaining about the extended warranty on their car and all had aftermarket warranties. Stick with the OEM warranty and you will be happy.

I didn't say the commonality of it. However, they can & do suffer. This is according to a Nissan service manager.

I was told all Nissans with catalytic converters made into the exhaust manifold(s) had the problem.
