Typing this from a 2013 MBP (late 2013, 2.3GHz quad core i7, 16GB 1600MHz RAM, SSD), running 10.15.7.

Ive always done OS security updates within the same OS version, but it keeps telling me that I can upgrade to Big Sur 11.7.4.

Is this a bad idea?

My wife has a newer MBA (2017, 1.8GHz dual core i5, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, SSD), also running 10.15.7. I assume the slower i5 may still be close to my older quad core i7.... It supposedly can be updated to 12.6.3.

Is this a bad idea?

On one hand, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ comes to mine. I’ve been an Apple products consumer since 1983, but it in the last decade or so, macOS and iOS for that matter, have dropped in reliability. With that in mind, Big Sur should be OK with the hardware configuration you’re running. 😐

On your wife's, yes, update it now. I'm surprised hers is limited to 12.6.3. Just checked.... Hers just went out of support so no Ventura for hers.

You can use OCLP to get Ventura - that latest macOS - on both of them. I updated my old MBA 2013 to it. It ran better than it did with Big Sur and your MBP has a lot more power, RAM, etc.

Upgrade away on both of them.

I would.

The only time I've ever had a problem with an update was when I had to install an older program (long story) and it wouldn't install. But I had a few Windows machines and the older versions of that software didn't have a compatibility problem.
