17 year old 140,000 mile truck. It wasn't leaking. Should I replace anyway since the driveshaft is out?

Yes! It is always good practice to replace any seal or boot once it has been disturbed especially when they are old like this one. There may be another seal inside that one, that looks more like a dust boot to me going by the picture.

I've seen seals like that that did not leak until you pull the shaft/axle. Then for some reason they leak and you have to take the whole thing apart again. Only takes one bit of dirt on the surface to make it leak, and that one has a lot of grit on it.

Usually on my stuff, if it's easy to get to sure , I might chance it. But if it takes a lot of work to get back in there I would change it.

Ok I'll change it. My only concern was if I got a Chinese seal it will last less than this 17 year old one. Are Motorcraft or National still made in the U.S.?

As I thought it is the seal and the boot. Hard to say were they are made but National has always been a good seal. That one takes less than 2 min to change.
