I have a '92 Mazda Protege with the 1.8L engine,44,500 miles. I changed the oil last October (Mobil1 5W30 SL with a Super Tech filter) and parked it for the winter. In April I put the car back in use for the summer to commute to work and run errands. One way to work is two miles, most errands about the same. Twice a month out on 20 mile runs to warm the oil as you all recommend. Since fuel is so high this year I will be using this car for work this winter, can I run this oil until the spring or should I change (Mobil1 5W30 SM)? Thanks.

if it was me, i'd change it to be safe. but low miles and M1 should be okay. although some manufacturers have a 1 year OCI if you do not put on the miles to warrant a change in that same period.

Well hey, I was about to ask a similar question. Motorhome with 79,000 miles. Is filled with a blend of Maxlife and one quart Maxlife Synthetic. Filled at the end of October 2004. Has 2700 miles on the oil. Filter is showing some rust at the seam. Oil looks very good. Most of the miles were a 2000 mile trip in May. The rest were shorter, usually 20 to 200 miles each. So I will be going on a trip this October. I guess I should change it before the trip. That way I won't over extend the oil as I might if I start at 2700 miles and I won't have to worry about the filter bursting a rusty seam. It's not badly rusted looking, but then I can't see inside the seam.
