Car is a 2001 Camaro Z28 with the Borg Warner T56 6 speed manual. I bought the car brand new. GM manual states that the stock fluid never needs to be changed. At 12,000 miles, I dumped the stock fluid and put in Amsoil Transmission fluid in anyway. Now, the amsol has 90,000 miles of driving in Florida heat and a few trips down the drag strip. Is the current fluid good for ever or should I think about changing it? If I change it, what is the general concensus about Mobil 1. I use it in the rear end as well as the motor and will soon switch to it in the power steering system. Thanks for your input.

I change my manual trans fluid, usually at 30,000 miles. If I'm lazy, and I used synthetic, I sometimes leave it in for 60,000 miles.

It's preventive maintenance. The cost of manual transmission fluid just isn't expensive enough to not do it. I currently have 212,000 miles on my 98 Ford Contour SVT with absolutely no trans problems.

Make up your own mind.

I noticed no difference in the Transmission after changing the fluid. It was the ATF, but i made sure that it met the Specification that was required by GM for the transmission. I don't remember the exact product number though as it has been 5 years. I will change the fluid now. What do you guys think about M-1. Why in the world would GM not even EVER reccommend a transmission fluid change?

Because most of the people they sell cars to are not DIYers. GM wants to show how little maintenance($) their cars require. We at BITOG know better.

I have never been happy with the Mobil-1 synthetic in my T56. It seems to "slippery" for proper syncro engagement. I'm gonna uses Molakules' company's Specialty Formulation's Autoglide in it next.

Hammer

Your T56 is a Tremec make not the older BW 6 speed. That is unless you have replaced it with a BW trans. I've used Redline D4 ATF before and have been using Mobil 1 ATF since I rebuilt my T56 2 years ago. My LS1 SS see's a good bit of track time and I have had no problems with it. Shifter engagement feels as good or better than the Redline lube.

I also change it around 30-50K just for the fun of it. I also like the smell of ATF!

I change my Manual Transmisson oil every 60k or 5 years just to be safe.

I'd change yours since it's been sometime.

My Chevy truck manual says change the oil out at 90k. Transfer case same. I did both at 25k...

Take care, Bill

i changed the fluid on my dad's 1990 F150 in 2001 right after he got his new truck and started driving his old one.

it was the blackest ATF fluid i've ever seen!

it looked like the same color of the gear lube that was never changed as well.

but the weird thing is, i didn't notice anything in the shifting after i changed it.
