Should I change my ATF?

Hi BITOGers,

I have a question about my old '68 Dodge. It has a Torqueflite 727 3-spd auto. The PO said he had the trans rebuilt stock about 25,000 miles ago. That was also about 15 years ago however. I purchased the car last year. The car shifts great and the fluid is still a nice pink color.

I've learned a lot about engine oil but I'm still a rookie when it comes to all those other fluids that go into the drivetrain.

Question is should these older transmissions get a regular drain every so often or possibly a drain/flush? Also, if so, what kind of fluid is best suited for that transmission? ATF-4? Something else?

I Googled some stuff about it and the fluid recommended then has been superceded and the most suitable modern product is something of the Dexron III lineage.

Chrysler when building them said they didn't need fluid and filter changes but I really don't know. If everything is solid I would not worry too much. Those 727 transmissions are probably as close to indestructible as it gets.

we have a '69 coronet R/T with a 727 and our trans guy said Dexron. I trust that since he worked for chrysler. I think you should just pull the pan and change the filter. If anything looks dirty or soupy from 15 years of moisture, then flush it...if not, you're probably just giving it a well deserved drain & fill.

Good chance the torque converter has a drain plug. Change the filter.
