Should I care about IPv6?

This is in regard to a personal home cable internet connection... The new cable modem I just installed supports IPv6, and so does my router. When I enable it on the router, it then of course assigns IPv6 addresses to my home clients, in addition to IPv4 addresses. But is there any tangible benefit of it to me as an end user? Or should I disable it on the router?

Not really any benefit or disadvantage, I'd not disable it either.

Not yet.

IPv6 is something that has been coming for years. I don't think we'll see wide spread implementation in North America for a few more years.

I do advise my customers to install the packages. There are some services in Solaris that depend on IPv6. But that doesn't impact the typical home computer user.

Your router creates a home network on the other side of the router. IPv6 is only needed in the real world internet, not your home network.

You as the end-user will not notice any real difference.

*Technically* if you have IPv6 end-to-end (i.e. your home to the server), it might have slightly better performance due to more efficient routes.

Leave it enabled.

+1 - leave it enabled.

- IPv6 is the equivalent of having the current Internet IP scheme as a LAN segment within your own home.

No reason to turn it off....

Almost everything is V6 ready, if router needs to deal with V4 it will do so. Its meant to be completely automated.

At some point the network may no longer work if you turn it off. It does nothing to slow things down, its built into the network chipset.
