The wife and I just purchased a used 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 28,600 miles. Looking in the oil cap the engine appears very clean, however, I have no service records. I have a bottle of Auto-Rx ready to go. Would it be a good idea to do a treatment not knowing the maintenance history or wait awhile? I was also thinking of doing 2 oil changes at 1,500 to 2,000 miles the clean things out also.

I think it would be a great idea since you don’t know the maintenance history. In fact, it would be the first thing I did. The 4.0 is notorious for leaky rear main seals. This will help clean the seals to keep them nice and supple. If weather permits, I’d run a good Heavy Duty oil like Chevron Delo, Mobil Delvac, Shell Rotella, etc. The 4.0 seems to like these oils and they are a great combo with ARX.

since the maintenance is unknown, Id do it. Was it a lease turn in? If so, you might be able to make a very good assumptiuon that it ws dealer maintained, and if so, thats not bad.

But you never know if they took it to the $9.95 lube place every 10k either.

Run the auto rx then run a good 40 weight oil, which seems to be the best choice for these engines. My guess is that yoru engine will like that, and if you pick a good syn, your milegage may increase

I just ran a treatment of ARX on my low mileage Wrangler 37k. For the cleaning I would go to your local walmart and buy 6 quarts of their supertech 5w30 or 10w30 and use a supertech filter. Should cost around $8 or thereabouts. I would do the same for the rinse. Since the oil in for such a short interval, there is no use wasting money on a good additive package.
I am not sold on this whole "Jeep needs a 40wt oil" hubub that has been repeatedly said on this forum. I have not seen anything spectacular with a 40wt in UOA's.

Do the auto Rx. wn1998 may be correct depending on your service duty. After the treatment..if your wife is a long commuter ...I'd use a synth xw-40. 10k OCIs are quite possible. If she's a short tripper ..a xw-30 weight since the likelyhood of reaching any decent oil temp (where the oil will truly be at any rated weight) takes much longer. Fe wear numbers appear to be the main reduction with a 40 weight.

Nice engine. Plan on your wife getting bored with it before it ever wears out.

Thanks guys. I changed the oil Saturday with 6qst of Pennzoil 10w30, FL1A filter, and 12 oz of Auto-Rx. She drives mostly short trips so I'm going with Pennzoil 10w30 and 3,000 mile changes for now. The wife doesn't like to buy new cars so I'm hoping it lasts awhile.

I would A-RX treat an engine coming new off the dealers lot so as to help get manufacturing and break-in "junk" into suspension.

Our XJ Cherokee is due for third annual treatment, now, at 88k (first used at 42k when learned of product). (See UOAs).

Recommend BALDWIN B2-HPG filter, strongly.
