Should I add lubegard to maxlife ATF?

I am in the process of refresh the ATF in my 1999 Cherokee (XJ, I6) with 110 KM on the AW4 transmission. I plan to use maxlife ATF as I can get a decent price from advance auto using online coupon. I am also tempted to use lubegard red since so many member reported great results with this product. My question is, since maxlife is already a synthetic fluid, will it be a waste to add lubegard?

Don't think it would hurt it. You might not be able to tell a difference with or without it.

I've added it to my Xterra, it takes Dex III, and I have added it to a bus that took ATF +4. Both got shifted a little smoother, but that might have just been the new fluid I put in with the Lubegard.
Thinking about adding it to my Taurus that I put Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle.
I say go ahead and add it. Never heard of a bad report on it.

I agree with SuperDave, you may not get extra protection from LubeGard with Maxlife ATF but it for sure doesn't hurt your transmission. Specially if you buy a quart bottle for $20 + shipping on Amazon, and using only 6-8 oz in your transmission (the recommend dosage is 1oz per quart ATF), the cost is $4-5 extra for several years is almost nothing. If I need to add 1oz LubeGard per quart ATF every 6 months like zMAX, then I would not use it.

I agree, give it a shot, its a high quality product. I put a small dose in both our cars(5oz.), and even that has made a positive difference in shift quality.

Some people like additives some don't. Unless you have a specific problem you hope to fix or specific goal you hope to achieve, I don't see the value in doctoring good, well formulated fluids. At the very least, try the Maxlife by itself first for a while. Then, if there's a problem, play with additives.

Instead, why not use Redline ATF? It's one of the best. The price (about $10 per quart) is nothing compared to stepping up the level of protection: more heat resistance and more antiwear properties for the gears (yes there are gears in automatic transmissions).

I don't see the need of adding Lubegard to Valvoline Maxlife.

It won't hurt. It 'might' actually help, but not as much as a weaker ATF.

I recommend Lubegard for wimpy and OE ATFs.
When you step up to a synthetic, one of the biggest weaknesses, the base stock, is addressed.

Lubegard really works.

Added it to my P/S fluid, and made a big difference in the steering feel.

I added a whole bottle of Lubegard Red to Valvoline Maxlife, i saw no difference but figure would do no harm.

Thanks for your pilot trial. I think I will hold off adding lubegard to maxlife. After 2 round drain/refill with maxlife (previously supertech DexIII), I noticed an apparent improvement of shifting. Maxlife rocks!
