When we bought the house I had to replace some T12 4' long florescents in the basement; it's been 11 years and enough have gone that it's time again. So far, I've determined that T12 is obsolete and T8 is where it is at, along with electronic ballasts meant for T8. I looked and it appears that I have magnetic ones. I don't think LED is needed, although I'll price shop; I do want white light as it's my workshop and not a living space. The remaining working tubes are GE F40 40W and F48 25W (oddly enough I'd swear the 25W is brighter than the 40W, but it's possible the 25W are 10 years newer); google says both are 4100k temperature, so I think I want 4100k to maybe 5000k for color.

Question: in replacing the ballasts I can get a unit that does 2 tubes or 4 tubes. Any reason to prefer one over the other? In my case, these lights are about optimally placed, 6' off the ground, and for years I ran with just two tubes in each receptical (as you can guess, the units can hold 4). So I'm tempted to again run two tubes per--"but for a little bit more" I could install the 4 tube ballasts and install tubes at will (or leave some future house buyer a bit less baffled). The 4 tube units cost a bit more of course, but if they waste energy doing nothing then I'd err towards buying the 2 tube units.

I recommend converting to LED. Costco has Feit 4' shop lights for 19.99 starting 28 Nov. I have installed a couple and have had good results so far. Much brighter than my older fluorescents.

I totally agree. The boss just recently converted all the shop lighting to LED and it made a huge difference. Much better color and evenly lit. It will make a difference on his hydro bill as well.

Don't have a Costco membership.

Ballasts are $15-30 each, roughly speaking; fixtures are $50 and up? plus I'd have to remove the old ones. Not sure that is "best" move.

Good point on "brightness"; I should figure out a target for lumens.

Seriously check out the LED bulbs at the Home Depot. I got the Phillips cool white ones as shown in the pic. They also have daylight ones.
I've never cared for daylight bulbs. These LED bulbs are brighter at 17 watts than the previous fluorescent bulbs.

Ok, maybe this 32W LED for $6.98 and this Osram 4 tube ballast for $30? Not sure why this GE 4 tube ballast for $20 is $10 cheaper--is it lower quality?

I only have four 4 tube fixtures and two 2 tube "U shaped" ones to retrofit/update. I'm probably going to rewire from one light switch to two, as I only am in half the basement most of the time--so cost savings ought to be fast (or not, as the only heat source for the basement is electric).

The Feit ones that Costco sells that say work "in any housing" don't work in T12, ask me how I know. Home Depot has LED tubes from Feit that either go directly into a T8 or T12 housing or else LEDs that go in a T12 housing where you cut out the ballast.

I converted the T12 lights in my kitchen to T8 using the same bulbs shown in the pic with ballast I bought on Amazon for $10 each. ROBERTSON 3P20116 eBallast

I'm having great results with the Costco LED replacements. They were on sale for $13/pair. Hard to beat that.

They are absolutely brighter than the T8's and T12's I replaced. I love them! THEY DO work in my T12 fixtures. However, I have electronic ballasts.

Interestingly, Costco had an earlier version that was even brighter.

The Phillips 2200 lumen ones at Home Depot are $6.99, but they are dim, regardless of the 2200 lumen rating.

Pay for the Costco membership, buy what you want and within a month go in cancel say you aren't happy with the membership and cancel your membership and get your money back on your membership dues.

Closest Costco is 17 miles from work (half hour? I think more), and 46 miles from home (way more than an hour). MIL has a Costco membership, I'll see her in a month, but I'll pay CT sales tax. I think I'd rather pay a pinch more, and buy 1-2 tubes at a time, rather than all 10-12 at once, and find I hate the color. Buy two, install, review. If I like, buy more; or buy a different color.

This conversation isn't going where I thought it would, but that's ok, I wanted the feedback. I think I will look into getting two of the direct-wire LED's; since my old magnetic ballasts should be replaced, and a ballast is about $4/tube, then paying $4 more for a tube that doesn't need a ballast "doesn't cost me" anything extra.

+1. You can also get tubes to retrofit led into old fixtures.

Too bad about the Costco LED's. I have three in my garage, and they're much brighter than the old T12's they replaced.

If you are members at other warehouse clubs, they both have similar products.

Supton, sorry if I missed it, but what type of T12 fixtures are these? Shop lights with power cords, or hard wired strip lights or troffers?

IMO, unless they're easy enough to bypass the ballasts on and retrofit with LED 'tubes', I'd either just re-lamp with quality T12 tubes or swap out the whole fixture with an LED fixture. I'm hoping today's LED fixtures are better than today's T8 fluorescents. Most T8 fixtures (mainly the ballasts) are junk that you're lucky to get 5yrs out of. Old magnetic ballasts or older electronic ones are beasts.

Someone did a nice neat panel upgrade there! Hate the dryer mashed up against it, but sometimes that's where it's got to go!
