Shooting at Connecticut Elementary School

The whole thing is sickening, but I don't blame guns. What we had was a sick twisted person. I'm glad he's dead, wasting time on a trial and everything associated with it would have been a real waste of tax payers money. Odds are he probably would have gotten life, another waste.

True enough. However in the USA: White male nut jobs in early 20's with vague political tendencies, little future, no direction and mental instability......plus a distinct lack of faith in any know religion.

There have been no automatic weapons used in any of these shootings.

So my three guns that can hold 30+ rounds - these are more dangerous in my hands, than my gun that holds one round? That makes zero sense, I treat all my guns by the fundamental gun safety rules.

I don't see a judicious use of firearms in a well armed citizenry any more than I see a judicious use of high performance vehicles when made available to the general public. You may be solving one problem with many carrying but creating a host of others.

Carrying a weapon changes a dynamic completely and leads to courses of action that just wouldn't have materialized otherwise, good and bad.

However a round in a chamber is not as affective as 30 rounds when you are blazing away in a Shopping Mall of a school. In Aurora what was used?? They the school had a security system that you had to be buzzed in after being seen on a video screen. This thing was wearing black and had body armour who looked at the screen?? He might have been taken as a delivery boy???

So these nasty weapons they just waltzed in on their own.....

I am all about root cause elimination. Let's find the root cause.

We clearly have a mental health issue in this country. The way Washington prefers gridlock over progress, I don't see a solution in the near future.

Say a prayer, and hope someone is listening.

Don't know why we should expect "Washington" to solve our problems.

Agree on the prayer part.

Try telling "guns do not kill people, people do" to one of the parents of the 18 children who were killed.

We could ban the sale of firearms tomorrow morning and it wouldn't matter, since there are already so many out there in private hands.
We could ban private gun ownership tomorrow morning and it wouldn't matter since there are so many weapons out there for which no record of ownership exists.
We could more carefully screen gun purchasers and it would have made no difference in this case, since the shooter simply used weapons owned by someone else.

This was a horrible event.
I think what every poster here finds so frustrating is that there is no ready answer to the question of how we can ensure that something like this never happens again.
Many of us have ideas, but I think that we as a society need to think long and hard before adopting measures to prevent these tragedies, simply because to embrace a false soloution would do us no good at all and would only feed the growing cynisism that seems pervasive in our society.
I think that we all share the same goal of finding means of making sure that this type of horror is never visited upon our children again.

Root causes? Broken homes, single parents, daycare warehouses. A media establishment that gives these losers infamy. Go back 50 yrs, kids had a mother at home, neighborhood businesses to work at after school. We were kept busy and out of trouble. It was the logical extension of a societal pattern stretching back into prehistory. The family unit, the tribe. warts and all, didnt breed mass murderers. What has changed?

The age of the perps is a clue. Raging hormones. a culture of peaceful folk , who glorify violence in their entertainment? Too many rats in a cage?

I'm just tossing this out. Just asking questions to help me past this latest horror show. Also thanking my great fortune that I avoided this path. For I was an alienated, angry contrarian. a " troubled child " with "sociopathic tendencies" throughout my school yrs. I was a destructive brat. Perfect warrior stock. No war. Doh!

A horrible tragedy for sure.
I just hope they don't politicize it and decide to urinate all over the constitution now since they have thrown it on the floor and walked all over it with dirty shoes already.

But as it was said by a kook fringe idiot "never let a good crisis go to waste". So its probably inevitable.

That IMHO would be an even greater crime.

No you are lame. The gun is just an object. No different from a drunk killing someone with his car - you wanna ban cars too?

I pray for all the families in this tragedy....but it does not need to be used as an example for gun control. We need to focus on the root causes of the behavior...all these shootings are from crazy mental people where their Dr's and families knew they were not right in the head.

I would love to respond and debate but we are getting close to the Politics rule here on BITOG.

Let's get back on track to praying for all the families involved.

..and pray for our rights to own guns too!

Sure do and out of political correctness we emptied the nut cracker suites fed them some meds and put them on the street. Just what do they expect?

This joker is a perfect example of someone who should have been locked away and never see the light of day.
Cant say much for his mother either, knowing full well she had a absolute nut job in the house and keeping a house full of guns anyway.

Moral ROT.

Policies, irresponsible parenting, constant steroid-ridden commercials flashing at high rates of speed and the media have brought us here. Couple that with Call of Duty, Gears of War, Medal of Honor, Halo, etc. are the most popular games in the nation and are free-for-all shoot em ups.

It ain't gonna stop until the parents, kids & society get back to a "normal" old-style life. Is that going to happen?? Unfortunately, no.

You do wonder if the more traditional family set up was better. Things evolve though and new systems and people will have to adapt and change to meet today's challenges.

I don't know the answer either

I was watching Piers Morgan last night. He was screaming at his panel and pointing at a picture of a Bushmaster .223 calling it "this shtupid gun" calling for an all out ban on firearms in the United States because it worked so well in the UK.

Perhaps he thinks that we are still a colony. That we are still loyal English subjects. That you can implement something of that nature.

It's not that easy. We are not just descendants of the UK. We have our own culture. We are descended from Italians, Germans, French, African nations, Arab Nations, Asian nations, Native Americans.....the whole globe. We are greater than the sum of our parts. We have our own mindset. It's one of the things that makes us great. You cannot take from us easily what we view as a freedom or right.

I just do not see a method of eliminating firearms.

Ask Americans to willfully surrender the 2nd Amendment? Not going to happen. Again, Americans have never and likely never will surrender what they believe to be a right or freedom.

Take away the ammunition? I personally know several people that are set up to reload their own ammo. A few are quite meticulous and come up with a product better than the cheap box of ammo at WalMart.

Take away the firearms? This is a disaster waiting to happen. Suprise raids by well trained, armed, and armored agents? After a few raids, they would be met by ever increasingly larger and better armed militias. The firearm seizure squads would find thier body armor ripped to shreds by .50 cal, .338 Lapua, and .300WinMag. This is a disastrous idea. I cannot see it not leading to another Civil War. If you think the insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan are crafty at creating IEDs, wait 'til you meet Billy Bob in Texas, Boudreaux in Louisiana, and Bubba in Arkansas...

I do not condone taking up arms against fellow Americans. That is just where I see such an action going.
