shocks offer no resistance going over sharp bump

Ok so my shocks work fine all throughout the day. No excessive bounce, no sway when turning, no dip when stopping, just no problems.

Lately though when I get home (apartment) and go over one of those thin and pointy speed bumps the tire goes up into the tire well more than it used to and it sounds like the shock is making a thump noise. There's no scuffing marks on the tire or tire well, so I know the tire's not going that far up.

Also, it only does this when I go over the bump very slowly. If I go over it a bit faster than usual it doesn't do it.

Anyone know why this is happening? And is this is preliminary sign that my shocks are starting to wear?

If you have a trophy truck.. probably need to rebuild your bilstiens.

you dont even list the TYPE of vehicle you drive so its hard to offer any advice.

model ? year? mileage? oem shocks or what? etc.

so you have monroe sensatrac struts?

I think its likely they are starting to fail.

I had bad luck with those and I doubt they are making them better now.

Monroe redesigned some of their Sensatracs recently. Check Jimmy's thread.

Monroe offers a lifetime warranty against wear-out, so I would make a claim.

yeah they're sensa-trac.

What's frustrating to me is that I had Bilsteins before, and they went almost 90k miles before they had the same symptoms. These are doing it in less than half the mileage.

The only reason I didn't get Bilsteins again was because I lost my paperwork and couldn't afford to buy them at the time. Well that and I was needing to replace them right away to save money on labor because I wouldn't be charged since I was having other suspension parts replaced at the time.

Look like I'll be going back to Bilstein then. Thanks for the info my friend.

No receipt means you're out of luck, at least according to the fine print on Monroe's website.

To make a claim under this warranty, return the worn-out or defective product with the dated original receipt to the dealer or retailer from whom it was purchased or to a Tenneco dealer for verification and exchange under this warranty.

Did you purchase them with a credit card? I would call Tenneco and see if they can help you out.

I just called the place I bought them from (Advance Auto) and the kid there told me he'd replace them so long as they're the same type/brand that they sell, which they are.

I guess it doesn't matter to them so long as they get their money back from Monroe. Who knows how they ret reimbursed but so long as I don't have to pay, I'll deal with having to replace them every so often after all since I save a few hundred in the process over the next few years.

I didn't have the receipt either, so I asked a counter guy at Advance Auto Parts, he said buy a new set, bring back the old ones in the box and they would give a full refund, which they they did.

On the other hand, north of 200K miles it not uncommon for vehicles to make all kinds of odd noises
