I suppose you could drive to the vendor, wrap and package your purchase yourself, drive the package to the post office, stand in line with the package, fill out the required forms, deal with a postal employee, get back to your car, drive home, kick back and wait for your frocking package to be delivered.

I was thinking the vendor could use tongs instead of their hands.

He could, but that costs extra.

Back in the 90's I got the buy one get eight free BMG music club CD thing. Paid $2.30 or so per "free" CD for S&H then 3 or 4 of them would show up in the same container, sent media mail of course.

As I understand it, the "free" CDs BMG gave away were cheating the recording artists, as they don't get royalties on "promotional copies".

If I were supreme commander of the universe, I'd make anyone advertising something free if you paid shipping, offer that item completely free for local pickup at their warehouses. This would undoubtedly lead to warehouse districts in North Timbletown AK.

Until you realize they send you something wrong and refuse to refund the $29.99 shipping.

Fablo and ViagraBoy, I didn't see the OP talk about ebay or cases with exorbitant shipping and handling charges. I saw it more as the legitimacy of "handling" in the context of shipping, and why the vendor should or should not be compensated for "handling." I see "handling" as a factor that pertains to time spent on actually moving the merchandise.

Many buyers expect shipping charges to be exactly at the rate the USPS, UPS, FedEx etc charge. Most vendors expect to be compensated not only for postage, but also for packaging materials, and a the trip to post office.

moli - I understand what Karl is asking, I was providing an expanded fab answer.

More hilarious, until you just posted I always thought the guy's name really is "ViagraBoy"

Just glancing at a user name, sometimes a person doesn't really read the name. I used to think your was 'Morbid Man'....like you had a really pessimistic view of life or something. I'm sure there are other examples around here.
